Re: Which Joint For Column Wrap

If it is PVC it should be "straight".

The biggest complaint I have toward PVC trimboards is slight variations in thickness, even within the same board. I've seen them vary as much as 1/8" in thickness in an 18' length. It's uncommon, but always seems to bite you when you least expect it.

Lone-did you dado it? if so, and it's 3/4", did you glue a piece on the back for reinforcement (imagining a 1/2" cut would leave little material).

That was before you went big casino in Atlantic City. The only gambling was weather the horse would jump off that tower on the Steel Pier or not.

I figured even the mosquito races went big time sense then too.

All my victories were small time local stuff at Echo Farm Campground. Still have the ribbons though.

Not to worry, I know NJ is a beautiful state.

With the 5/4 material, I have seen and 1/8th from end to end as well. That was certainteed brand, I have been using Kleer and it seems to be a bit better, but I have run PVC through a thickness planer to resolve this issue, not that its something I want to actually do.

Re: Which Joint For Column Wrap

It leaves the surface like a saw cut, porus, but still smooth. The time I needed to do it , I only needed 1 good face, so I only planed 1 side and left the factory face exposed. If your planer is variable feed speed, run at high speed as this will keep the chips from gumming up. The shavings are funny, sort of like that fake snow they use on movie sets.

Speaking of factory edges, has anyone tried the Azek with the Edge feature??? I used to use Azek years ago, but my supplier switched to CT, then to Kleer as CT's prices got out of hand.

Re: Which Joint For Column Wrap

......I am not sure. I noticed the Azek Edge samples in my lumberyard and I bought 7 lengths of 1x12 a few weeks later....I think my lumber yard still has the old stuff b/c the sample was MUCH less porus then the 1x12 I had....

Re: Which Joint For Column Wrap

when i clad posts, mosts times be it azek or wood ill butt joint them but on the wider piece ill make it 1/4" more than the standard flush width and give a 1/8' reveal to the joining piece.

this allows for movement and creates shadow line

Yes, I plowed the dado with a 3/4 straight cut router bit. The column sides were ripped out of 5/4 sheet goods and the dado is just 1/4" deep, so there is still 3/4" of material at the dado. Originally, there was a band molding detail that fit into the groove, but the Architect saw the dado and liked it.

Who's PVC are you using? I do not have this problem with Kleer.

Found this on several occasions with Azek, usually only minimal variations, but on a beveled joint it can be a PITA.

I have had more issues with kleer varying in thickness than any other brand. I just ran three thousand feet of Azek thru my shaper to make T&G "v" groove and I had very consistant thinckness.

In PVC post wraps......Butt joint, Bond & fill structural adhesive and SS nails or trim screws. I've never had an issue using Azek, Kleer, CT or that other brand I can't think of right now that starts with a P I think
