Re: Groin Vault Ceiling
thats some pretty nifty framing in that link. i like the skill saw jig for cutting those arches. joes pages are really cool too.
i'm glad i found this site. usually its just me and a lacky or 2 framing and i'm the one showing all the tricks, not really learning any new ones unless i come up with them myself. come here and do some reading and some searching and its tricks gallore. cheers, H Last edited by hell&highwater; 02-13-2008 at 06:27 PM. |

Re: Groin Vault Ceiling
can't you just use the old calibrated eyeball technique
Last time I was involved with building a groin vault, I wasn't the lead, heard about every curse word known to man, and threw a lot of curved rips on the bonfire. By the end of the second day it was done though. 12' x 18' room had a 4' x 3' rise to it then to a flat center ceiling. That was the pimpenest gameroom I've ever seen though. had plaster trim around the perimeter of the ceiling, a big medallion in the center of the room and a good size fireplace on the interior wall w/ two french doors entering the room on either side of the fireplace. that and a $10,000 pool table was going in there......bastids.... Re: Groin Vault Ceiling
hey guys hows everything? here in baltimore things are extremely slow. i tried to upload some pics. of this really cool wine cellar i'm doing but it failed three times in a row.i must be doing something wrong.high tech never was my bag. if anyone knows what i'm doing wrong LMK.will be all thin brick over c.m.u. with the brick going over a groin vault ceiling i will be framing by the end of next week.also on the diagonial arches i am going to use bullnosed fypon to simulate cast stone ribs.using intersecting 14' lam beams to carry the framing load as i dont want any load applied to joist of 1st floor.

Re: Groin Vault Ceiling
I just took a closer look at Tim's photos. That is one impressive work of art. I wonder how long it took these guys to frame this ceiling & how long for the rockers to do their bit. It appears that the sheetrockers will have to split seams on 3/4" plywood. That seems real tough! Thanks for the photos.

Re: Groin Vault Ceiling
Steve,
That groin only took me a few hours. I don't recall how long for sure. I layed out the curves and got about halfway through the "purlins" before I had another guy start cutting for me. I'm going to guess about 5 or 6 manhours. It was only 6'x7', so 4 of us lifted it in. The layout for the curves is supereasy. Before, we'd figure the curves mathematically and then layout them out, which was time consuming. Over at the JLC Forums, a framer from Texas came up with the idea of "lofting" the curves using the new CM calculators. If you have the newer ones, you can calculate the height along a curve for whatever spacing you chose, then just lay out the spaces, mark the heights and connect the dots. For the intersecting curve, the heights stay the same but the spacing changes. That's it to lay it out. The drywallers don't seem to have a problem splitting the drywall on the 3/4" ply arches. It is easier to use 3/4" then you don't have to adjust the curve for the thickness of material. The curved hip tray in that link, you do, but I float it with the 1x4 and then let the taper make it work. |

You and your crew have talent for sure.It was built in Port Orchard, WA in McCormick Woods golf course community. Thanks for the comments. They mean a lot. If it wasn't for all you guys who've been in the field so long and willing to share your experience online, we'd never even know what a groin vault is. |
