Golf Club Storage Stand

I know this may be somewhat of a stretch but I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good site to find plans for building a golf club storage stand. I wanted to make one as a Christmas gift. I have made several variations of searches through google with no luck as of yet. Basically, it is a wooden stand that will hold 2 golf bags with a series of shelves in the middle to hold shoes, balls, etc. I don't care if the plans are free, I just want to get them asap.

Any help is appreciated.

Why not something like this:
http://www.brookstone.com/shop/produ...=Result*R1C1*T

It would be really easy to build.

Re: Golf Club Storage Stand

That's EXACTLY what I want to build! As you can see from the site it's basically made from particle board - not what I want to use. Having a plan to start with and then modify would just make things easier for me.

Re: Golf Club Storage Stand

Thanks Cole. I wanted to make one for a good buddy of mine for Christmas for his cottage. I was thinking of using oak plywood for most of it. And then staining it to his decor. That or maybe pine - his whole cottage is finished in pine.

Terry, why don't you just swipe those plans? Print out the pic and relate. It looks like 5-1/4" base and you know the dimensions of bags and clubs, it seems easy enough to me. I often reproduce furniture from photos.

Re: Golf Club Storage Stand

I was thinking about doing that Teetor. I don't have a great deal of experience with furniture making - give me a plan and I can make anything though. If I could find a store up here that sold them, I'd just go in and subtly take measurements when no one was looking. Do you think using dowels and glue for all the joints would be the best fastening method? I saw one made of stainless steel in a catalogue but I don't just want something store bought. This is the kind of buddy that would appreciate the thought and craftsmanship of me making it by hand.

Re: Golf Club Storage Stand

Terry, I don't know your level of expertise or the amount of tooling that you have available.

The box in the center (in particular, the back) provides 95% of the lateral stability. I would rabbet in 1/2" ply there. The base and top rails I would blind mortise into each end cap and I would dado in the shelving. Dowels are weaker but if that is what you are used to and have the jigs for, have at it. I'd recommend epoxy or Gorilla Glue for assembly and be certain that your joints are tight. Use lots of clamps and you might want to use a tabletop fixture to keep everything square.

Re: Golf Club Storage Stand

The tools available to me are pretty extensive. What I don't have in my own shop, is in all likelihood in my Dad's. I inherited all his tools when he passed a few years ago - I literally don't have room to store tham all where I live. The problem being is that the majority of the furniture making/woodworking that he did was after I left home and after his second retirement. So, I didn't get the opportunity to see him and learn all the techniques.

If I can't find the plans, I'll likely just end up designing one myself, read up on all the techniques you mentioned and have at it. Thanks for your advice.

Let me know if you get stuck. I printed the pic and will keep it through the 25th.

Thanks Teetor. I'll take a stab at the design if I can't find anything online.

Re: Golf Club Storage Stand

Eureka! I finally found one!!!

http://www.sawhorseworkshop.com/howimadeit.html

I'll probably make a few modifications. I like the piece with the circular holders that goes behind the bags themselves (like in the link you posted Cole). I'm sure I'll post some pics once it's done.

Do you have a biscuit jointer? I prefer using one of those over dowels.

I do Mike. I've never had occasion to use it yet though. Now that I'm dabbling in amateur woodworking more I'm going to have to do some reading and break out more of the tools from my Dad's shop. Along with the biscuit joiner, there is a vast array of different size biscuits - all in individual containers, catagorized and labelled.

I was nicely surprised too Cole. I didn't even care if I had to pay for it so it was nice getting a free one. I really appreciate the fact you were thinking about designing one for me. I'll definately take pictures.

One more question...

Looking for suggestions/recommendations for the material:

1. Birch veneer plywood ($60 a sheet)
2. Red Oak veneer plywood ($72 a sheet)
3. ???

IMO, - - Birch is light-colored and less porous and will not only take the stain better, - - but offer a greater choice of coloration, - - not to mention an over-all smoother finish.

Oak will always look like oak when stained. Personally, I don't care for the look.

Re: Golf Club Storage Stand

Thanks for the input guys. I'm inclined to go with the birch now.

I'm thinking of going with a clear finish or a very light stain/finish.

Exactly right, Teetor, - - use Oak if you want it to look like Oak, - - use Birch if you want it to look like anything else.
