Floor Joist Out To Deck?

Building second story. I want the floor joist to cantilever out for the deck joist using womanized material. Anyone see a problem with this?

Re: Floor Joist Out To Deck?

Not as long as you have the proper support for the deck.

How far are you going to cantilever it off of the second story?

Re: Floor Joist Out To Deck?

Actually I used the word cantilever but the reality is their will be support beam and post. I know the 25% ration on cantilever, I am concerned with the sealing of the house. Is their a problem with the deck and the second floor sharing joists?

Thanks

Hi irv, nothing wrong with doing it, but I cant' see any reason other than "pulling out" under severe dynamic loading, as to why doing this is of any benefit. I see all the blocking and flashing as being problematic down the road, and there are much less invasive ways to provide a super solid deck/house interface, just curious about why

Re: Floor Joist Out To Deck?

If your going to have a beam and posts anyways dont run your joists into the house at all. This way down the road when something happens and you need to replace a joist or 2 you can acctually do it. Not to mention all the blocking and flashing that was already mentioned. I see LOTS of 20-25 year old decks around here that are canted and the framing is in poor shape. They are all in desperate need of replacement but who wants to take on that job?

Some of the ones I have seen are but not all of them. But there are a ton of people who get thier houses stuccoed over the siding right now. And they dont bother to take care of the 25 year old deck that is falling off the house. So now someone has to deal with holes all over in the stucco from ledgers, railings (why do people attach rails to the house? and the surround them in stucco?) And wonder why the stucco patch looks funny? I did one house that I had stopped to talk to the guys starting to set up for the stucco about a patch down the street from a railing (what a supprise) and ended up talking to the homeowner that knew she needed to redo the decks and talked her into holding the stucco guys off while I tore off 6 decks from her house. Glad I caught her before the stucco was done. And then she told me "well the guy down the street that just had his stucco done might want you to do his deck as well" I thought "great more stucco patches" Grrrrr.... I really wish the stucco guys would tell the homeowner that things need to be done in a certain order so it all looks good and right.

Take this advise as being very true. Build your deck off (not attached to) the house.

Than why are you running the joists into the house and not using a ledger?

Another little 'tid-bit', - - far as I know, - - if you ever have a 'house-fire' the P.T. wood is highly toxic, - - so that's another reason you wouldn't normally use it in your 'application'.

Yeah! These days "womanizing" is grounds for a harrasment suit.

But, all kidding aside, I agree with the mob here (which is rare for me). If the deck isn't "really" cantilevered then there is less than zero reason for building it that way.

Air leaks, water leaks, rot problems, future renovation and repair issues...

In fact, building the deck "off" the house, as someone else here said, I would take literally. Don't even attach the ledger (or the inboard railing posts) directly to the house without some kind of spacer to maintain breathing room and prevent the all-too-common moisture/rot problems down the road in the house framing/sheathing.

Re: Floor Joist Out To Deck?

Just Finished home with cant. deck Problem is door inside to deck outside has no NO room for threshold therefore snow ice rainwater etc is going to be leaking into house deck is on 2nd story with sliding glass door no head room to raise door nor would in my opinion look pretty stupid to have a 8' sliding door 7" off the bedroom floor .

If you do decide to cant. deck make sure to use smaller lumber than house floor joist meaning 2x12 floor joist 2x8 cant joist For deck (etc)at least you will have a step down to deck instead of even floors like im dealing With

Good luck Personally I think Its A waste of Money and bad idea to cant. deck

Save head achs, if you cant into the house you have opened yourself to leaks, me? I'd run a ledger and lag it to the band then tie into it with my joists and joist hangers, myself have seen many canted jobs that have leaked and owners had to spend a whole lot more to replace all the damage.

Re: Floor Joist Out To Deck?

I'm going against the mob here. I put a 4' X 15' balcony off my master bedroom and cantilevered it. The posts would have ruined the design of the house. I don't have any problems with water either.

Re: Floor Joist Out To Deck?

Asking for problems. We refinish decks, lots of decks and we see all kinds of bad things. you know how dry rot things are, often by the time you have an idea that something is wrong, it's really bad under the surface. Some of the new houses are the worst for doing inproper flashing..... There are too many builders that make it look good, but don't really do what it takes to seal and flash. I don't know how they get away with it, but about 25% of the new homes, the ledger is only nailed, not lagged. I don't understand how they get a final.
We just did a job where the builder used Non PT wood and painted it.
Take a look, only 4 years old.
