Which Fein Tool?
I need some help/enlightenment....
I was told about the Fein Multi tool several months ago and low and behold I saw them in a local hardware store. They had about 3 different model/packages, the most expensive being over 300 smackers which was the more powerful motor and the no tool quickchange type option for attatchments. I went on Tool King to check pricing and now I am seeing kits for almost 800 bucks. Anyone who is very familiar with these tools that can fill me in on whether they think the more costly models are worth the cash or if a lower cost model makes more sense. I'm planning on using the tool for remodeling work, mostly for those tricky cuts in wood but I will probably also run into tile applications where I need to cut out grout or make detail cuts in ceramic and stone tile. www.rubycon.us Ruby Construction LLC Lancaster Kitchen Remodeling Lancaster Bathroom Remodeling Last edited by orson; 04-13-2008 at 10:08 PM. |

Re: Which Fein Tool?
The cheapest models come in below $200 for a single speed with allen wrench adjustment, however, in order to get variable speed, which is worth having, the cost comes out right at $200 for a starter kit with very few blades.
As far as tool vs toolless, I've used both (my dad's uses the allen key, mine is toolless), and I recommend the basic model with the allen key. As long as you attach the wrench to the cord, it's really just as easy to adjust the blade, and it costs less. I've got the toolless model because I got a really good deal that made it cheaper to buy that one rather than the basic model. Fein also makes models that are cordless or pneumatic powered, but I couldn't say much about them because I've never used them. as for blades, buying in bulk seems to do a lot to lower the rather considerable cost, so I would recommend buying what ever set has the most blades that you think you will actually use, even if it seems like a lot more money. Good luck on your new tool, you will be wondering how you got along without it before long. I worked for my dad for a while, and knew how useful these tools are. Then I got another job when I moved away for college, and I can't count the number of times I've said that it would be handy to have the Fein right now. I finally bought one last week, and I've used it every day since then. |

Re: Which Fein Tool?
I have the mid level model with the quick release option. It keeps the blades tight where as the allen key version sometimes loosens up during use. The three lower priced models all use the same blades and attachments which are easy to find at stores like Woodcraft. The $800 model is more powerful but uses different blades and attachments which many stores do not stock. Hope this helps.

I have the vs one with the allen key. Buy a $1 rubber allen key holder that goes on the cord and life is good.
With regard to the blades loosening...yes they do and it's aggravating. I just found out that Fein sells an $8 washer that solves the problem. It has a grit on both sides of the washer to give it some bite. For blades, look no further than here: http://www.multiblades.com/ You're welcome.
