Drop Ceiling

All right guys this is my first post first question.
Im looking at a job for a drop ceiling in a basement of a church. My question is, what do i get for labor?. The job is in mass, and there will be plenty of soffits. 1750 sq ft.
Thanks guys

Re: Drop Ceiling

This is timely. I just called to get budgetary numbers from a couple suspended ceiling contractors in my area. The material and labor quote for a "normal" commercial drop ceiling is about 2.25 per square foot, strictly for budgetary purposes. Obviously, depending on tile selection, you could easily double or triple that. Without a doubt, building soffits with grid will bump the price up as well. I asked about running the grid on a diagonal, and both companies guessed that would add 30 cents a square foot.

Re: Drop Ceiling

2x4 system I would pay $2.75 install labor and materials ceiling panels at
.55 cents for the panels.

I would charge $4.50 a sf

Probably best to call a couple of the mechanical ceiling contractors in your area and ask. They word you want to use is "budgetary number" and don't use "estimate", "quote", or "ballpark" in your conversation. Most companies will give "budgetary numbers" over the phone, but won't "ballpark", even though it's really the same thing. Using the right word gets better results.

Obviously, when they give you a square foot number, you're getting a number for a simple open room, 2x4, ordinary grid type and white color, and cheap tile. When you go to 2x2, special tile, special grid, diagonals, obstructions, etc, then the price goes way up. You want a site visit for a proper estimate, in this case, unless they're willing to share the upcharge for certain features.

Having said all that, most mechanical ceiling contractors can install the stuff cheaper than most people can buy just the material. It's amazing.

The number I gave will be totally useless to the OP, but I happened to have them handy, with a related story on how I got them.
