Cutting In Soffits
I am putting in a wood burning fireplace in my unfinished basement. The pipe for it is 8" in diameter. I have to cut in to the soffit it is a 12" soffit for the pipe to make it up over the roof. What are some ways to do that and make it water tight again. I have vinyl siding and aluminum soffits?

Re: Cutting In Soffits
I'm sure there should be some type of flashing for an 8" pipe I believe you have to use bvent or double walled pipe you can cover the whole pipe with a box all the way up or you can leave it exposed you should be able to find the right flashing at a heating supply as far as cutting the soffit I would use a dryway circle cutter to scribe the hole make the circle cut the soffit down the middle and put it in in 2 pieces hopes this helps regards Rob

Re: Cutting In Soffits
I believe you have to maintain your 1" gap throughout the length. They do make "boots" for both going into the soffit and coming out through the roof.
As your an electrician I wouldn't think of stepping on you toes (always used the saying I've never burnt anyones house down and today and today ain't a good day to start), why would you propose to step on someone elses? JMO you should look into getting another contractor to do it for you. How many houses are lost every year to chimney fires? Isn't your family worth spending a few bucks?
