Carpentry Apprentice Pay

Hello new to the site , and had a question

I recently turned 18 and on the week of my 18th birthday i decided to ask for a pay rise , as i was struggling to pay my car insurence , and other things ,money was never an issue since.

My boss wasnt keen and still hasnt responded , i thought he would be fine with it , since my college report was glowing , and im very enthusiastic and hard working , i live just outside of the london area.

I was wondering if anyone was or employe any aprentices and how much there hourly rate was ,

Thanks ....

Re: Carpentry Apprentice Pay

I haven't checked in quite a while, but when I started as a carpenter apprentice in the union, my starting pay was about $8.72 per hour. I would venture to guess that it is now in the neighborhood of $12 per hour...That is for someone with very little knowledge. I live in Southern California, which is relatively high on the pay/cost of living scale. I have no idea what any of this means in London...just answering your question. I also don't know what the conversion rate is.

Pay raises should come from you making your boss more money. Are you producing more work? Are you able to do different types of work since your last pay raise?

Age doesn't matter, lazy unskilled people exist in all age brackets.

Congrats on turning 18 and welcome to the site.

Re: Carpentry Apprentice Pay

I'm in Toronto, and am in a pre-apprenticeshp program with the local union.

First term apprentices start at $15.80 per hour, plus 10% for vacation pay.

Second and third term apprenctices make between $23 and $28 per hour, plus 10% for vacation pay.

Journeymen are being paid about $33 per hour, plus 10% for vacation pay.

As dougchips stated, "Pay Raises" are pendent on your actual skill level and production. So if you were my employee and have not produced and have not spent enough time on the field(Considering your age), I wouldn't expect a pay raise at the moment.

We employers do not give raises just because you can't pay rent, sustain your financial obligations or your schooling fee's don't match your income. What we look for is if you are or are going to make the company profit from the hard work you preform.

The best way to ask for a raise is first ask for a performance review. Then discuss your goal with your employer.

Re: Carpentry Apprentice Pay

1st period apprentice is 60% of journey scale. Go down to your local hall and sign up. If journey scale is around 32 bucks a hour you will get around $19.50 a hour.

You will also find more people your age too instead of some busted up hack in his forties trying to suck off the boss for 15 dollars a hour.

See the difference. You will also learn faster than your non union counterpart and get raises every 6 months with 600 hour of work and a week of school.
