Boxing Out Corners On A Garage
I'm still trying different ways of doing it. Does some have the easy way when building a garage to box out corners of the garage???

Re: Boxing Out Corners On A Garage
Might be a regional term, but what do you mean "box out corner"?

He's probably talking about bird boxes.

Re: Boxing Out Corners On A Garage
I was guessing plywood on the outside corners...a lot of builders here used to do this. Haven't heard it called that or anything close though.

Re: Boxing Out Corners On A Garage
Ok, I guess I am not using the right term. On the corners where the two overhangs meet. It looks like a box to me so maybe that is a bad term to use. Is there a proper term, and any suggestions of a easier way to build them??? I'mnot sure how to better explain it.

Re: Boxing Out Corners On A Garage
Ok, I call them returns. I know someone who calls them pork chops
( how do you figure?)

Hey, that's what I always called them . . . (kind of got that triangular shape like a pork chop) Actually, - - I call it a 'return' if it's 'boxed out' (has some depth) . . . I call it a 'pork chop' if it's flat (like just 3/4" thick) |

Re: Boxing Out Corners On A Garage
Digger,
Now that we've established what you're talking about I suppose you'de still like an answer. Sort of hard to explain, for a boxed look, I'd level back from the bottom of the facia and maybe just go back a little beyond the corner board if in fact you're using them. Depending what you're using for trim, ( lets suppose you're using 2x sub material and wraping with aluminum). Cut your angle pcs. ( inner and outer ) nail them to bottom of barge rafters, then I always close the end with a pc. of plywood. After you wrap all your trim then you can run your cornerboard right up under it. Hope this is of some help. Now I'll turn the floor over to someone else to explain a different style, perhaps wraping the roof around. Anyone?

Re: Boxing Out Corners On A Garage
Just seems too hard to explain, - - there are SO many different styles of cornice returns . . . then, like you say, with some, the roof returns, too . . .
Then the 'finish material' makes a difference on whether it needs to be built 'solid' or not . . . Anyone wanna give it a try?? How are you doing it now, digger?? Last edited by Tom R; 06-24-2006 at 07:45 PM. |

Re: Boxing Out Corners On A Garage
Ok thanks guys for setting me straight on the proper term. Talk about hard to explain you will be saying what the hell after this. I guess I'm doing it like JMIC said with cutting plywood in a triangle and then running a 2x6 from the front of the garage to give it that "boxed look" to make it easy to wrap it with soffit and facia. If you have any other suggestions keep them coming.

Re: Boxing Out Corners On A Garage![]() We call them "wing dings". Not a common term at all unless you have worked for me. Usually we can get them from a scrap 2x8 or 2x10. |

Re: Boxing Out Corners On A Garage
I don't care for the boxed out look myself. More & more of us around here are doing it different......
In the picture..... take the triangle shaped piece and move it back flush to the rake side wall. This eliminates the need for the rectangular shaped piece. This way there is no "box" look. The rake side soffit goes all the way down to the eaves subfascia. Siding then covers the triangle shaped piece. Maybe I need to post a pic for you to understand, or maybe you get it????

Yeah, spec's way (off-set) is much better than 'dying-in' to the corner (jmic had mentioned that, too) . . . Looks much better and leaves a 'home' for the top of your corner posts to end squarely. |
