Back Panel Hole

I have a hole in the back luan panel of the kitchen cabinets where the electricians trimmed out the hole for the range hood plug. Now it has a large box on it for electrical so I can't just put a new panel up to cover the hole.

Any ideas, the hole is about 3/4 inch by 1 1/2 inch

Re: Back Panel Hole

Are you saying the electricians cut the hole to large? Why would the electrician cut that hole anyway?

Electrician puts j-box in wall and wires it. Sheetrocker hangs and finishes around box. Cabinet installer cuts cabinet for receptacle when he is installing the cabinet. The hole should have been cut the proper size and location to properly trim out the electric with no "hole" showing around the coverplate.

If this is not the way it was done, there really is no practical fix. You could remove the cabinet and replace the back.

Re: Back Panel Hole

Not exactly sure of what you have in my mind(except for a faux paus). How about making an oversize backer from a piece of cabinet "skin", and have the electrician fasten his cover plate onto the surface of this. Fortunately the cabinet above most range hoods is small and not used for much, so it would probably not get much flack from HO. Here is a perfect example of why the mere mention of an electrician or plumber doing any cutting on any finished surface sends me into a panic.

As for these boxes for hood or micro-hoods, I have the electrician just leave a whip sticking out of the drywall, close to the upper right hand corner of the cabinet, then I bring it to wherever I want the box, and cut the cabinet for an old work box when installing..Especially nice for micro wave hood combos, becasue the odds are the pre installed outlet will fall behind the vent piping.
