Anyone Have A Design For A Generator Screen?

I have an outside generator that the HO want covered on four sides with lattice and cappped. Before yoi say anything, I know I've told him it's gonna overheat. He doesn't care.

If you have a picture, that would be great. Something tbat requires no tools to break it down. I have been told a cap on top would hold the four sides together. I'm not too keen on this at all but I need some ideas if anyone has some I'd gratefully appreciate it.

It's gonna overheat.

You might take a look at some of the vinyl privacy screens carried by the box stores for a start. I'm going to be putting one up next week to conceal an LP gas bottle. For bonus points, think about hinging the sections so they can be opened for ventilation while running.

Depending upon the genny you can extend the muffler through the side of the enclosure and that reduces the heat a bunch.
Then there is the self cooling fan exhaust. Take a look at the cut sheet of the unit and see if there is a port where that gets exhausted. If so you can build a duct for it to vent outside.

You can ruin a good genset without proper venting. I know this one.

I know. The guy is nuts. It's one of them nice Kohler box ones. Whole house generator. I'll try the box stores to see what they have. He has a heat pump compressor he wants the same thing done also. I'd guess same is gonna happen, or efficiency is gonna go south. Some people you can't get through to them until it fries, then it's "I tried to tell you"

I was wondering if it was that sort. Aren't they already pretty well enclosed with their own sheet metal? In that case, it might work out as long as the exhaust is well vented.

I had a second-hand nibble last year on building mini-roofs for some rooftop air conditioners. Nothing came of it, but if it had, I was planning to go straight to the manufacturer for recommendations.

Either way, it might not hurt to get a CYA signed. Puts you on record with at least an "I told you so" if the unit goes belly-up.

I agree,

Those units are nice and tight. But I bet you could talk to the factory rep and get all the info you need.

Looking at the units on their web site it would seem that you could extend the exhaust pipe a couple feet.

make the call and see. Then get your paper work in order

I recently did a screen for an air exchanger or what ever you call those things. I called the HVAC dude to come out and look at the deal. I ended up putting a 6' tall shadow box fence around it with minimum 12" clearance .

Yeah, shadow boxes for heat pumps
that folks are too good to look at.
Just give it 12-16" clearance.
Maybe build some louvers for a roof?

This will work and probably not overheat the generator if you don't use the privacy lattice with the 1" holes. I would use the 16" clearance though.

That is some sweet bass. Lemme see if I can dig up a picture of the unit. It's next to the deck I'm doing.
