Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
Is there a jig you can buy that allows you to make all of the holes on the side of the cabinet to allow different placement of the shelfs or how do you guys do it? A customer wants this option, I normal do fixed so this will be the first time experimenting.

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
There are several different kinds available, from simple $15 plastic jigs to elaborate $200 aluminum jigs. Just depends on what you want to do.
Do a web search for something like "shelf support boring jig". |

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
Use an old cabinet side as a template? A piece of perforated masonite, like you hang tools on? Seems either would work, especially if you add a depth stop to your drill.

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
There are no old cabinets, do they sell the jigs at lowes or home depot? I did a search and found a few of the plastic ones for 30-40 dollars which is a rip off I will make one before I do that. And I forgot all about the perforated masonite, I need to look for some scraps.

http://www.amazon.com/Shop-Fox-H3291.../dp/B0000DD4ZJ Where are you located? I can buy this same jig locally at Western Tool Supply for $14.99 http://www.westerntool.com/product.htm?pid=455243 And I can buy some of the fancier jigs at other places locally. |

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
I made a much simplified version of the "WWA Shelf Pin Jig". Fast, perfectly squared holes, no tear out in melamine or prefinished plywood.

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
Personally I like this one - http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?p...er=shelf%20jig
The whole set comes with a Self Centering bit to prevent you from enlarging the holes on the jig by accident If you want to spend a little more http://www.festoolusa.com/products/r...er-583291.html |

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
For a cheap solution I have used this with success:
http://www.mcfeelys.com/product/FSC-...p-Lay-Out-Tape Just tape it on and drill - worked great. Make sure you use a good bit - I like festools 8mm shank bit designed for shelf pin holes - very clean. |

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
Drill a series of holes in a 2" pc of plywood, reference one side top, the other bottom. Use a Forster bit to do the drilling. It will be the least destructive on the jig and give you the cleanest holes in most materials. When it wears out make another. Should take you about 8 minutes to make one.

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
I actually have a few different sizes that I use often made out of 1/4" melamine. They have the holes in the front and the back so the holes always line up. They're easy to make. When I used them I simply clamp and use a self centering bit. I also have a couple of the plastic ones you an find at stores and on the internet.

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
Thanks for the links guys, what I am probably going to do is make a template on autocad then transfer it on a piece of Plexiglas to make a jig. I just need to find the common pin size and pick up a drill bit.

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
Yer cracking me up. I just make'm. Bing bang boom, done. About 2 minutes of design work required. It doesn't have to be that accurate. Just as long as when you drill the holes you always have one side down. The holes will always line up. Have fun during the storm.

It's easy on autocad, I drew a temp out w/in a few minutes hit print. Now I just gotta wait to get out to go to lowes and get some Plexiglas. |

Re: Adjustable Selves/cabinet Jig Question
I make mine 2 1/4" for a 1 1/8 on center hole. I like the looks of that festool jig. Maybe I'll make one. If I am going to spend that much money on drilling holes I'll just by a line boring machine. I don't make enough cabinets to justify one, sure would be nice though. I really hate those days. Book cases are the worse, just keep drilling I tell myself, just keep drilling.
