Adding An Addition Above My Garage

Hi All,

Just curious, I am thinking of expanding my master bedroom out over my attached two car garage. I live in a split level home. The garage has a hip roof, which I think would need to be leveled for the expansion. In any case, would you all advise that I hire a design/build firm, get an architect to draw up some plans/specs, or a good contractor who knows his stuff??

Thanks,

Richie

i would first get whoever is going to build it, and have them take a look at it. if he does desing than have him handle that. is he doesn't than hire an architect, and have the builder work with him. that is how i prefer to do the job. you have less mix-ups between the two, and the builder should catch any of those infamous architect ideas that aren't doable.

Make sure a structural engineer looks into - footings, structure, etc...

Thanks guys--I was curious about the footings. The garage was beautifully built by the original owner--he was an engineer by trade, so I am not sure if he created footings that could handle future expansion/loads.
