8x8 Cedar Post Base Shoe

Didn't know where to post this but... I have a client who has 8x8 cedar posts all around his house for his various porches and outdoor living area. They have the simpson strong-tie adjustable bases and need them covered. He doesn't want then wrapped in cedar. He was thinking metal. Anyone know where i can get some ideas? I need some pictures or something. At least 2 piece shoes.

Could you draw up a design that would work and take it to a metal fabricator in your area?

20 oz. copper would look and work good, - - cut a slightly-upward kerf (only about 1/8" deep completely around the post at your desired height and put a matching bend in the copper to keep the water running off and out. You could make it in one piece with 4 horizontal (kerf) bends and 4 vertical (corner) bends. Make it 5-sided so you're not left with an open corner, - - 4 equal sides and one that's just one inch or so.

Use a hand-held grinder for convenience and a nice, thin cut.

Use a hand-brake for the 1/8" bends, - - score a line on the inside to make it easier, - - but only bend it once.

Separate any 'differing' metals with an isolation membrane (even felt paper would work).

What type of blade do you use with your grinder? Nice Tip

I usually just use the diamond blade that I already have on there, - - but you could put a saw blade on it, too.

You could also just use a sawzall for it.
