Random Width Rustic Hickory Floor We're Working On.

Spent 3 days this week laying 1600 ft of random width (2,3 &4"), random pattern rustic hickory floor. Flat wore us out, but we got it all down. Will start sanding on Monday. Quite a few semi open knots that we'll fill with walnut filler before sanding. They picked gunstock to stain with to tone down the extreme color variances. Getting ready to head to the shop to glue up the stair treads. I'll post more pics as we advance the project.

Part of the allure of the hickory is the stark contrasts, especially in a random width rustic. atleast for me. Seeing this makes me miss hardwood flooring

Beautiful stuff. I always hate the little extras that you have to do for hickory, esp. rustic, but man the payoff is nice at the end.

Not a fan of the rustic look, but nice work nonetheless

very nice floor. Shame they want to stain it. I would just clear coat it.

You're gonna get your wish. He called yesterday & said she'd changed her mind after carrying my sampleboards around the house comparing to all the colors of paint & trim & the cabinet samples.

Tickles me pink. I'd bid this job with stain for free, since it's such a large floor. I've already bought the stain & will end up eating it, but that's a small price for the time savings by not having to be as particular in the final sanding & not having to crawl around 1600' of floor wiping up stain. Should be putting on the first coat of clear tomorrow morning.

sweet to hear. some people have no idea what stain does to wood. Plus you can clear coat it and be gone like the wind. the clear will make the board sizes jump out at ya and pop the black and knotty look.

damn nice looking floor. i have a kitchen coming that has that same wood for thier cabinets

I'm glad they aren't staining it. But why don't you hit them for the price of the stain, no upcharge, just get your money back for them changing their minds on you. You can even give it to them, you probably will never use it.

Floor looks nice. I like the contrasting pcs.

He offered to pay for the stain Leo. It's $70 off of a very profitable job. It's gunstock, a color I use quite often on oak floors & furniture, so it won't go to waste. The way I do business, especially on large jobs, is every client gets something for free. It leaves a good taste in their mouths that shows up in the referals I get later.

OK, if you use it a lot then it is just profit for the next job. I hate it when a client changes their mind and I have to eat something. Puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Re: Random Width Rustic Hickory Floor We're Working On.

ahhhhh
PIN- Stain- ahhhhhhh- stop the stain train and kick them off..........that is a huge mistake IMO...... honestly... what a shame... you know as well as I do.. if they wanted a certain color they made a mistake in species and natural tone of the wood selection ... ahhhhhh OMG... that is the purpose of that wood ... the charachter...

If it were me I would do everything within my power to convince them NOT to do that... and I would start with scratches & dents-and they will happen. They will stand out like a sore thumb....but if left natural... it will be a lot easier to repair with some simple light sanding and a top coat of what ever you are using for a finish....

stop the "Stain Train" PIN....

Hey Brian, you'll be happy to see they changed their mind on the stain.

I'm a happy, happy camper. Put the second of 3 coats on the floor yesterday & collected a fat paycheck for all our hard work. Homeowner is estatic & so is his wife. Said she was so happy she promised he was gonna gonna get a little last night.

We've gotta put in the stairway in a couple weeks & put the final coat of finish on after all the trim & cabinets are installed. I'll post more pics of the final finished product later.
