Lead Base Paint Removal Wood House.

Here is a job that we are on now. The wood house is 130 years old, we are the lucky ones choosen to remove all the paint. I will update the pictures as the job goes on.

Quite a project- I think you need a few more ladders though (just kidding).

Are you spraying on a stripper? Looks like a product we used from Sherwin Williams some years ago- apply, cover with plastic overnight, remove next day.

Ugh. What a mess- not my idea of fun, but someone has to do it.

Welovepainting... What products are you using and what is your application?

Spray on, sit overnight? Scrape off and wire brush? Doesnt lead paint removal need to be contained?

What kind of certification process was needed to remove lead?

Reason for asking: i looked at a similar project last week. House is over 100 years old. All the paint needed to be removed. I would use baking soda to strip everything.

I would also like to know what product you used and what type/brand of sprayer.

Plazaman,

What kind of time and results can you expect with soda blasting? What about cleanup? Is there a risk to the wood or would there be no damage.

We have a complete strip coming up later this fall and I am looking for the safest and fastest method. There is no lead on the house I am doing.

Re: Lead Base Paint Removal Wood House.

The product we are using is Peel Away 1. Specificaly designed for lead base paint removal although they have many products to suite just about any paint removal need.

What we did is wet scraped the house to remove the bulk of the loose paint, then we spray the peel away coating on with a gracco texture sprayer (it is the only sprayer made to spray this stuff im not sure the exact model but gracco or Sherwin Williams would know. You will also need a special gun with the pump. The peel away company will send a rep out to coach you along. You spray a tack coat on as first coat then spray another coat right after the tact coat dries and wrap it with the peel away paper. After that you let it sit 48 hours pull the paper off and scrape the paint off most spots it comes right off without much effort. You may need to repeat the coating process twice if it all doesnt come off the firsst time around. The material goes about 20 square feet per gallon. After you pull the paper and scrape the mess off power wash the surface, neutralize the surface, and let sit for 30 days. Then you can prime, paint, or stain.

The good thing about this product verses sand, soda, or ice blasting is that it keeps the lead paint contained for easy clean up its like cleaning up a dirty wallpaper removal job. Another benefit is there is no damage what so ever to the wood unlike sandblasting. In the state of Ohio it is not yet a requirement to be certified to remove lead base paint alhough it will be next year. The lead base paint removal class is $125.00 per person the class is two hours long and only one guy on the crew has to be present and certified for the project.

As you would guess these types of projects are time consuming and tough. The chemicall striper will burn you very easily and it does work great if applied correctly. About ten years ago when I was first introduced to this product we used it on a red brick house that was painted several times white and it came perfectly clean back to a red brick house.

If you would like to know square footage prices pm as long as your not in my immediate area.

Blast pressure can be regulated, we can blast delicate surfaces like fiberglass (gaining popularity in the marine industry for anti fouling paint removal)

Soda is water soluable, so simply wash away. Keep a debris net under your work area to capture paint chips.

Sq.ft rates varry depending on coating type and how many layers. but i can tell u this... its the fastest way to strip any surface. other methods cannot compare. i personally havent blasted any homes, but from i heard... its great.

Anytime ive ever seen wood homes sandblasted it leaves the wood pivited. I have yet to see someone use baking soda.

Re: Lead Base Paint Removal Wood House.

Sand will damage the wood, no question. Soda is very soft, 2.5 on MOHs hardness scale VS 7 for sand . Another option for wood is walnut shells & corn cob.
Pretty sure we can soda blast storms and sashes

My machine has regulated pressue, different from regular blasting pots. It allows me to set blast pressure and precisely meter media.

Check this video. I dont have their equipment, but just to give you an idea.
