Decking To Be Painted
Hi The deck was painted last year using latex and the floor of said was painted given 2cts of b/m oil semi transparent gloss
1/ Now latex has started flaking in places (not a lot mind you) What would your primer be and also your topcoat 2/ The floor is also flaking a little as you walk out from the doorwall would I be able to apply exterior latex over the semi transparent Ps As previously posted I arrived here in the states only last Feb and to be honest getting used to all the various materials is definately harder than I thought, for instance in the UK everything is still pretty much oil for exterior and emulsion (latex) for interior. Anyway thanking you again in anticipation for your collective and constructive replies. D/B |

Re: Decking To Be Painted
sorry let me explain I painted the uprights and handrails a white exterior latex and the floor a diff colour, thinking it would be more hard wearing I used an oil paint, now since the general consensos here is to use water based paints inside and outside I wandering how to put right my work from last year.

Re: Decking To Be Painted
That must be one bright yard on a sunny day. If you can, strip the floor and reapply a coat of semi-solid white stain. You are going to need a strong sodium hydroxide based stripper.
PS: your floor should not be flaking if you used a semi trans oil. You must have overapplied it. |

I think it glossed because he changed it into a film former by applying a second coat wet on dry.

Re: Decking To Be Painted
Going to a water borne stain will not give you greater durability per se. Going to a latex paint is even worse on a horizontal surface. Your vapor transmission rate will be shot to hell and if you think it is peeling now, come back in two years to a total flaking mess. I sugest you strip off what is on there and stay with a semi-trans penetrating oil.

Re: Decking To Be Painted
decks are usually a redwood. i've found they will always push a latex paint right off. semi-trans stain is the best way to go.

Re: Decking To Be Painted
I agree. We do decking and trellis work here in sunny California where summer heat can be tortuous. The only thing we've been able to get to hold up is the oil based semi-transparents. ONE- coat only, 2 coats gives you shiners that never seem to dry hard. You will definitely need to strip the other stuff off to give a good base.
Redwood is too soft for latex out here. Sorry for the hard lesson, but kudos for willing to make it right. Bay Area Painting Company |

Re: Decking To Be Painted
Hi just to let you know I gave the boards a light wash with a deck scrubber and touched up the high spots which were mainly the grain with the semi transparent and then I applied a full coat to the entire floor it looks a million dollars.
btw thanks for all the replies Regards D/B |

Re: Decking To Be Painted
David, I am not trying to knock you but you put a band-aid over a gunshot wound. It may look good, but go back in 6 months and look at it. (if you didn't strip it)
A semi trans has to penetrate the wood and cure there. Did you apply it over what was on there? |
