Upper Floor Remodel

Just wrapped up this 11 week project. I subbed most of demo and drywall and MEPs. I did some demo, all framing, insulating, painting, tile, trim, 15 doors, windows, built-ins, etc.

Existing stairs were all 2" too high and terminated at a head banger door upper floor remodel-_mg_2739.jpg

ripped triangles of stringers and glued/screwed new stringers cut from 1 1/8 ply

finished in maple treads/painted poplar risers

Bed 3 before. ripped out old floor, added closet and lights. New maple floors by a fellow CT member.

Re: Upper Floor Remodel

Thanks on both comments. I did the photos myself. I've been thinking about posting a thread on taking better photos of your work. I learned from a pro.

That project looks great, especially the bathrooms!

I'd love to hear about taking better pictures of your own work. I got a good camera for Christmas but my system is to just shoot 1000 pictures and choose the few that are decent.

Re: Upper Floor Remodel

I'll work on a photography post when I have some free time. There are some others that can probably pipe in as well.

A few random notes on this job:

1928 house is one of the first platform framed houses in the area
things were far from square, flat or level but everything was built really well except the stairs. Various owners lived with that mistake for almost a century
Downstairs is trimmed in gumwood, and it's gorgeous
The mirrors cost as much as one sheet of the penny tile

Yes. It was a chore but in the end worked out well. I had to rip into the meat of the stringer some too, but they are fastened to every stud. To minimize this rip I ripped a bevel on all the risers and treads.

Re: Upper Floor Remodel

That's a lot of work, but it was worth it! I'm filing away the tread / riser rip for future use if I'm in a jam.

Re: Upper Floor Remodel

Looks great. I love the colors, who picked those?

As for.the stringer triangles, awesome. I have a job that a good customer was asking me to fix. I have kind of avoided it because I had no idea how to fix it without a huge mess. Each step is different and it has a landing. Your solution negates most if not all of the problems.
