Exterior Restoration
We've been on this one for about six weeks now and just wraping up this portion of the house.
We demo'd down to the studs, put in spray foam insulation, re-sheathed it with Advantech zip wall, and installed home slicker rain screen over that.
The siding is 1 x 5 shiplap made from redwood and all the custom millwork was made from clear western red cedar. Flashing is all copper and the paint is Duration by SW.

Getting ready for paint. Still have some trim left to do on the columns too. I'll post some more when I get on site this weekend.
Add: Oh, and base too. Lead flashing going on the bottom to the patio that surrounds the house. (yes, we are using peal and stick over the top edge of the lead)

Good call on the lead flashing. I hate dressing lead but there really is nothing better if you can sell the HO on the extra cost.

Thanks Dave.
Steve,
We used 2 1/2" S/S ring shank siding nails on the siding and 15 ga S/S on the trim.
Ideally we would set the gun so the nail shoots flush but with the rain screen on the house we found it would compress when we needed to set an occasional high nail. That would cause the siding to tilt and leave an indentation in the wall. The Forman decided to set the nails deeper to avoid all that.
The filler is a two part wood epoxy made by Abatron. I've used it a lot on registered Historic buildings for repairs to rotted wood and sills. Works great but the painter hates it. He'll need to get over that if he's going to be around much longer.

Thanks Jason,
I was going to ask one more question in my previous post but you mentioned you were using Duration which is self priming.
You brought up about the painter. For what reason ? Will the nails holes flash and need what kind of primer and finish ? Curious to know are you using an oil or latex primer ? For me, I would be hesitant to use a latex primer because of the Abatron all over. Latex, not enough grip and it may flash. I suppose 1 primer coat and 1 finish of Duration. Two finish coats of Duration, it can be done, it would be like a tank.
Addl - I guess you have the painter using the Abatron ?

Yup, and he hates it! *(says it's hard to work with)
The primer is Zinsser "Cover Stain" oil based. Everything on the building is primed and back primed. We're also priming the cut ends to seal the capillaries of the wood. After that, it gets two coats of Duration.
The caulk we are using is Dyna Flex.

I think it's great and goes on easy, much less time than fir strips plus it allows the entire back of the siding to breath with out the interruption from the strips.
It was however, a little tricky with ship lap siding.

Great work Jason.
FYI, I use West System epoxy for wood restoration. I can control the hardness with different microfibre fillers, so sanding can be anywhere from easy to awww f***.

What part didn't your painter like about the epoxy you are using? Does he want to use spackle to make it easier for him to sand??

Yeah, the "painter" would have rather done anything to make his life easy. The Forman and I talked last week and he was sent home on a Thursday. We are using Duration and you could see right threw it!
The guys stayed a few extra days to get the first coat on before the wedding at the estate.
I have a well trusted painting sub going down on Monday to apply the final coat.
Been real busy and haven't had time to get final pics. I'll be down there next week to get pics and sign on for the rest of the house.
This is a great opportunity for this Company.
