Demo and replace stairs in the other direction

I love this family. They have 6 great kids and NO space. So while we were waiting for the permit to turn their carport into living space, they came up with the idea to gain some space in the basement master with reworking their stairs.

Nice job WM, clean lines and nice rethinking of the space. I liked the progress pics too.

Be sure to post some finished pics, I'd like to see 'em!

wow good call AW

I never checked that out. I left it as is since it was already in place and didn't effect what I was doing. The house was built original in the early 60s so I am not sure of the codes for windows at that time.

I will check on that if I am up in their area again.

Thanks for all the comments and input. I like to hear differing opinions about methods and materials.

tempered glass is also needed within 24" of a door opening-there is probably some code regarding the use of tempered glass within so many inches of a stairway (regardless of the 24" from the floor issue).

I like the cork board idea at the desk!

Windows in tub/showers also need to be tempered glass. Remember that when installing replacement windows in older homes.

That's a good slogan - I'll have to remember that.

I don't mean to come off as ignorant, but what is tempered glass and why is it used in bathrooms and near staircases? Is it just stronger glass less likely to break?

Its stonger, and if and when it does break, it breaks into a million little pieces which arent super sharp, rather than large shards which will cut you for sure.

If you ever bump your shower door too
hard you'll find out!
Tempered never cracks...it
explodes.
But you can walk on the pieces bare foot.
(If you can walk on crushed gravel barefoot)

Just curious to see what everyone else is up to. I enjoy looking at pictures of other peoples work, especially remodels since I work on them too. Nothing more than that.
