Re: Roof By A Hack

Robert,

If you didn't already, you should cap the ridge. I see lots of exposed nails there which will leak at some point. One bundle of 3 tabs the same color as what you have there now will do it. I'm pretty sure the application instructions are on most bundles.

Only one problem... there is no ridge its a one sided slope. But I took care of it today.

That's what you call a shed style roof for obvious reasons. I usually terminate those with a piece of drip edge.

Re: Roof By A Hack

Hacks get the job done. (period)

Some old guys, or sometimes "experienced" 25 yr old foremans
will laugh at 'hacks' that overlap shingles or who use Henry 208 roof cement or who cant cut 45s in drip or who cut themselves when they use their red and greens on copper.

To whom it may concern, roofs that dont leak and last are good roofs.

Hacks that come down off roofs in one piece are safe workers

And the super duper awesome roofers with all this knowledge and specifications and experience and all will be the first ones to point the finger at one of their foreign helpers who held them up cus they aren't strong enough to carry their 40ft ladders

From the pics it looks watertight

good job

the overlap kind of sucks cus it shows bumps

if you wanted eye candy, you'd cleat down double lock copper

it's shingles guys
not too bad for a deck builder

"with perfect practice comes perfection"
hey, you got to hack a few times to get started
it's the fact that you got started that counts
keep up the good work
with time comes greatness

- a hack

Re: Roof By A Hack

@ Matt
First high wind storm is going to blow those shingles right off the deck. So specs are important Matt. The adhesive on the underside of the shingle is "NOT" designed to adhear to the granules. Oh I see, your a tile and paint guy so you wouldn't know that.

@ Robert,

Nice try but there is a reason each bundle has installation insturctions on the wrapper. = )

Re: Roof By A Hack

Since RidgeWalker woke up this old thread, I will make a comment nobody else mentioned. Probably because most are not as old as me.

Prior to architectural/dimensional shingle being pre-made like these, the old-fashioned way to create that affect, was to take common 3-tabs and overlap them just as Robert did with the pre-made architectural shingles. There were no significant adverse problems related to those applications, granted, they were far and few between.

Also, regarding wind blow offs. The "old-fashioned" asphalt 3-tab shingles did not even have an adhesive sealant strip embedded on the shingle and they seemed to have lasted for years.

The most important factor for wind resistance and shingle blow offs is the correct amount and placement of the nails, precisely where they are supposed to be nailed, not about where they need to be, but precisely.

Good to see you back, RidgeWalker, and I see Grumpy checked in today after being gone since the end of March too.

(Is there something that we should know about the two of you?)

Also I'd like to point out that a compressor on a 2 square job is nuts IMO. In the time it takes you to setup and break down the compressor you can have the roof already nailed.

Can you post a link to these videos? I searched online and couldn't find any.

Re: Roof By A Hack

I've overlapped many of them. Did my own house that way. Elk, GAF, Timberline all said it wouldn't hurt anything. I did a couple of 3/12's with 6" sidelaps. I did make sure it was only 1 layer thick on the 'bottom' shingle. I'd tear off the top piece if necessary, and completely cover any asphalt showing.

Well you know what they say...if it lasts' and doesn't leak, must be a good roof , regardless of the I&W flashing kit .

Last I checked, (everyday) the sealant on the underside is intended to stick to the granulated surface of the shingle on the course below it. It also on a hot day sticks to your gloves, felt, I&W, hoses, and of course, finished roof surfaces.
