Photos For Another Use For Shingle Vent II As A Wall Vent
Here is a modification of the Shingle Vent II Ridge Vent we applied about 7 years ago, to be used as a top of a mansard wall vent to alleviate the severe 2nd story internal heat issues this home owner was suffering from.
Additionally, we applied a "Green" roofing system, ie; the white Duro-Last single ply membrane on the top flat roof surface. Notice in the photos, that we only painted the membrane which overlapped onto our newly created fascia board, which lent rigidity to the top of the Shingle Vent II Ridge Vent, which we cut in half for this installation. This was several years before I knew about the Smart Vent product manufactured by DCI Products, Inc. I now look back and feel that the Smart Vent would have been much better suited for this solution, but we made do with what we could think of. Now lets see if I learned how to resize and upload the photos. Ed |

Re: Photos For Another Use For Shingle Vent II As A Wall Vent
If I run into this situation ever again, I would use the Smart Vent from DCI Products and adapt that to the top of the wall, instead of cutting the Shingle Vent II in half like I did here.

Re: Photos For Another Use For Shingle Vent II As A Wall Vent
Cor a vent makes strip vents for situations like that. I used to use their ridge vent years ago when it seemed to be popular in fine homebuilding. It got to be ridiculously expensive though at 12 dollars for a four foot section so I stopped using it and started using the more popular and less expensive cobra ridge vent.

Re: Photos For Another Use For Shingle Vent II As A Wall Vent
I don't design the houses people live in, I just roof them and ventilate them to the best available knowledge I have gained over the years, and when a predicament with no quick easy answer rears its ugly head, I try to do the adapt those priciples the best that I can.

Re: Photos For Another Use For Shingle Vent II As A Wall Vent
I only painted the apron that hung down over the fascia and the chimney flashing material.
I forget exactly what I used. That was about 7 years ago and is still clinging on as good today as when it was first installed. I probably used a Rustoleum or Ace Hardware version of the same though. Those are my most common, but the HO may have given me some from her stock to match colors. Ed |

No, never had the need to.
I don't touch EPDM since I started my own company 24 + years ago and for the 8 years before that in the union, it was never done. Ed |

Re: Photos For Another Use For Shingle Vent II As A Wall Vent
Nice job Ed, I use the SVII in a few different applications also, and prefer it for the higher air flow you get than from the DCI product. The vent going all around like that was an excellent idea.

Re: Photos For Another Use For Shingle Vent II As A Wall Vent
It used to be a sweat box on that upper floor of these two elderly womens home.
I have to check back again this summer, but right after I did that job, they said it was much more comfortable. They used to have to run their A/C 100% full time. I also have to give credit to the White Duro-Last roof membrane on the top flat roof. That cools off the surface dramatically, so it is not all due to the ventilation solution I installed. Ed
