I call them strip vents

There is always enough roof to bring a home to code per ventilation.

I've been doing these for more than nine years and have not had any leaks, had a lot of comments from HO's about how much more efficient thier heating and cooling is, also about how much lower the same bills are. I will see if I can find a pic of what the one did this last winter and post it this evening.

intake or outtake

Are you sure the lower strips are not screwing up the draw from the soffits and acting as a intake????

Never had that problem, I have all my customers do the right number of vents in the soffet so they will be equal or have the numbers in the ridge a little higher. By monitoring the insulators and making sure they don't close off the bays above the top plate over the walls you can insure the air flow, you don't keep an eye on the insulators they will plug it up every time.
If you don't have good air flow you don't have good ventilation.
I have another method I use to gain air flow when there isn't any soffet to tap from, I'll post some pics when I can find them.

I have seen the smart vent and I don't like the way it's made, what I'am doing is better because it doesn't have a filter to plug up in time. I have seen and removed filtered vents that were plugged up on many occasions during tearoffs. Why is a filter used in the first place? don't we replace them when they fill up? How often do you replace a roof filter? Even when I use SVII I take the filter out before I apply it on the ridge or as you see in these pics on the lower roof.
This method is one I use when there is little or no soffet to vent, placed over heated space creats enough heat to open it after a snow and allows the attic to vent properly and by doing so keeps condensation from forming in the attic and keeps the attic temperature the same as outside, by keeping the snow from melting fast enough to creat ice dams, it allows the snow on the north side of a roof to disapate in the air. Thats the only way I know how to explain what I have seen with this method.
