Here's a thought, why not go and knock on the door and see if they can tell you anything about it? They either researched it and decided upon it for some reason or they got sold on it and more money than brains. I'm interested. The house looks like cool though.....which reminds me of another one....I'll be back.

Re: Glad I'm A Framer - I Could Not Roof This

There are alot of older houses in England with thatched roofs, it was a very popular way of roofing around the 1900's they mainly use reeds. It is an art form to do and very much different than normal roofing.
I will look for some houses local to me and take some photos and post them here.

Re: Glad I'm A Framer - I Could Not Roof This

There is a guy out here in LA who specializes in that type of roof. He even signs his name on a shingle in a place where it isn't too prominently visible.
I know of one roof he did that cost over a hundred grand. And not that large a house either. Big, to be sure, but not a massive mansion or anything.

Thatched roofs will supposedly go 100 years before replacement.

No problem. 1 dozen mountain goats and the tear off is done. I love the stone work.

Re: Glad I'm A Framer - I Could Not Roof This

Worked with a roofer in the 70's early 80's that did a 3/1 & 5/1 thatch. Really awesome, time consuming & expensive. But they are still functional roofs today.

Re: Glad I'm A Framer - I Could Not Roof This

When on my honey moon, I was watching some roofers thatch a tiki style gazebo. I guess a hurricane ripped through a month or two earlier and they were still repairing. it was neat to watch them. The thatch bundles were preformed and they were basically just shingling the roof. reminded me of the states though, two guys workign and one guy standing around watching. LOL

As far as flat green roofing I have some experience.

Hi Mate,

not far from you, near chester

i framed about 6 roofs in hartford nr northwich about 20 years ago that were for thatching, it was a new build site of about 50 houses but because there were a few old cottages dotted round the area they built the new ones to match.

you may have seen them from the main A556 if you have ever been down that way

Dear Americans, this is not a thatched roof, a poor plastic imitation with non the benefits of real thatch
