How are those racked? I see the seam line up no less than every 4 courses.

the other pic with the valley is the one I meant to post.
that is from just stepping off 6 inches or so and going with it.The directions plainly state what to do to remedy this.

you dont rack those kind of shingles and what kind of shingles does your package tell what to do about that?
you cut them like elk states and then every three has a seam line up.

Three step is fine....... I am trying to find quality roof subs to do my roofs since I dont have the man power or work to roof full time anymore. I cant find a decent crew who will three step they all want to two step like three tab..a couple of years these things will look like hell. When I work out of the valley on large runs the valley dictates the step. You cant stagger like you want when you do a low slope roof, the valley pulls them in.

yes thank you tom the valley will dictate it, if they would have looked at the othe pics you could see that that section of roof started out pretty much as a valley. like 4' of roof edge on either side of valley, it is a really steep one to. I read that on elk and gaf's web site, went out to the garage and layed out like 8 courses like that, the laminated sections of shingle are still over 50% over the top of the previous courses. Those are pretty close up pictures as there is no other vantage point to shoot from.

Somebody paint some 'pattern lines' on this photo, cause I just don't see it...
Isn't the laminate random anyway?
Everything's Tamko Heritage around here. They use a four course start w/ no scrap.

What they are saying is that from course to course the built up dog ears seem to be right above oneanother. That is what I do, no scrap, but sometimes the valley will dictate your pattern, the rest of the roof wont be such a PITA to start like this section.
