Latest Project

Below is my latest project. It's about 98% done. I should be finished tomorrow, weather permitting!

Also, got a really nice compliment from the owner at the end of the day today when he said "you do really nice work, I didn't know that people built things that well anymore".

Please excuse my big head and "patting myself on the back".

Thanks for the compliments.

Ventilation ? I place all the boards (deck and skirting) tight at installation time. Once the wood naturally shrinks it leaves a 1/16"- 1/8" gap between each board - plenty of ventilation. Most of my customers prefer the solid skirting - keeps raccoons and other pests from making a home under their deck.

By the way, the deck is 400 sq. ft. and the pergola is 14' x 14'. The 120 balusters were all cut from 2"x10"s. The steps are box frame too. The last things I have to do are to install a bench on the 45 deg. corner near the stairs and put nosing on the cut ends of the deck boards.

I just took those quickly at the end of the day today. It was getting dark and I just snapped a few. It's supposed to be sunny in Friday so I'll get some clearer ones then.

Ajax is about 30 min. from downtown Toronto, without traffic.

Decks,
Were you bored? Did you save a lot that way? Cutting the balusters out of 2x stock would leave you with a sharp edge, yes? Just wondering if the extra time outweighed the cost.

By the way, very nice job.

I cut the balusters out of 2x stock for a couple of reasons:

1. It's more cost effective and creates less waste = larger profit margin.
2. Most customers like the clean edge look.
3. By cutting them from larger stock I am able to eliminate virtually any twisting of balusters.

Thanks for the compliment!

Thanks Chris. I'm about a 2 - 2 1/2 drive from Wasaga Beach. Nice beach but too crowded with drunk teenagers all summer. I prefer hanging out at my buddy's cottage north of Barrie when I get the chance.

Terry,
Please explain the nosing on the deck boards. Sounds interesting. The deck is a beauty BTW.

Thanks Paul.

What I do to finish off the look of the deck (cedar only), especially for boards running at 45 deg., is take a deck board and rip 3/4" off the edges (the radius edge) and then finish nail it to the open/cut ends of the deck boards. I'll see if I can find a close up picture of it for you.

I sure hope so. The house is in one of the highest priced neighbourhoods in my area. Plus it was only about a 5 min. drive from my place - big time gas savings on this job!
