Today's soldier faces a different hardship than the soldier of yesteryear. Not facing a "real army" has advantages and disadvantages. Although they don't really have to worry too much about taking the proverbial hill against machine guns and tank, they are fighting an enemy that has no qualms about hiding behind woman and children. An enemy that hides in the village and booby traps everything.

Battlefield medicine has also come a long way with the combat lifesaver course being standard training and medivacs are a whole lot quicker. Many wounds that would have been a death sentence even 40 or 50 years ago are no longer so bad. These kids are coming home minus limbs and many other afflictions though.

I read an article a few months ago that was saying the 2-8th infantry had one of the highest rates of PTSD in the army, the same unit my son is in. He just returned home for a week and I saw no difference in him other than he has done a whole lot of growing up.
