The World's Most Dangerous Road

Bolivia's "Road of Death". This is crazy!

Some facts from the BBC...
Quote:
"Every year it is estimated 200 to 300 people die on a stretch of road less than 50 miles long."
Quote:
"In one year alone, 25 vehicles plunged off the road and into the ravine. One every two weeks. Choking, blinding clouds obscure the way ahead."
Here is the BBC Article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programme...nt/6136268.stm

And there are some more pictures here... It's the second one down.

Anyone up for a roadtrip?

Re: The World's Most Dangerous Road

The road is wild, but what about that tourist trail That wood doesn't even look like it's pressure treated and yet, oh my gosh, they're using it outside And those safety rails, LOL, don't look like they would pass OSHA standards for fall protection

wow--problem is, I wouldn't even bike on that road--imagine all the falling rocks that come down too! ...that other link with the muddy road is nuts...women giving birth in their cars is normal?

I have one question--pavement?

Re: The World's Most Dangerous Road

I've been on some mountain roads in Colorado down in Durango, Ouray and Lake City that are pretty identical to that one, but I'm betting that road is getting more traffic in a day than those in Colorado see in a year.

There is no way in hell you would get me out on that hanging plank hike!

Re: The World's Most Dangerous Road

I saw a History Channel documentary about Bolivias road of death. That would take some cojones to drive a truck on that thing.

Interesting note: A local man has dedicated his life as traffic director on the most dangerous section of the pass. He makes his living by the tips from drivers. Many say he is reponsible for saving possible lost lives.

What they fail to tell you is that all of the drivers down there think that they're Fitipaldi.

I think of Mario too and AJ Foyt, Sterling Moss, Richard Petty, Jackie Stewart. I just thought that Fitipaldi would be more recognizable to the younger crowd.

Re: The World's Most Dangerous Road

Three things -

The Russian road is really not that bad for a couple of weeks in the summer and the middle of the winter.

There is more than one Fitipaldi, but only one Michael Schumacher.

Why are none of the trucks on the Bolivia really old?
