Working On The Truck
Well I was replacing the bearing assembly on my F350 tonight and just about shat my pants.
I had the breaker bar on the nuts tightening up the bearing assembly to the steering knuckle, and to get a better angle at it, I had a buddy turn the wheel. Well I was under there looking at it while he was turning and all of a sudden BOOM! The f***ing truck fell of the jack! And like a dumbass I didnt have it with secondary supports underneath. Lucky for me it didnt pin my to the floor severing a leg or something. Very close call though. Always use secondary supports!!!

Re: Working On The Truck
Glad your ok 6string! I learned the same lesson a while back. I have an old car I was working on. I had it all jacked up, luckily I crawed out form under it and was standing next to it. The freaking thing fell off the jack. If I was under it I wouldn't be typing this! I used to always wonder why my dad would come out of the house and yell at me to get some more support under there
Even know when he sees me working on my vehicles he still checks my jack and supports On a side note an aquantance of mine was killed that way. Hes was changing out his tranny and the car fell and crushed him like a toothpaste tube, I didnt see it personally, but the people at the scene said his insides squeezed right out. Dave |

Re: Working On The Truck
I have a steep driveway so when I do work on the truck a couple of things happen.
1. I block the wheels and make sure they can hold it all by themselves. Then I put the ebrake on and put it in R (6 speed) R is the strongest gear to hold your vehicle. Of course this only helps if your working on the front. 2. Jack it up and add jack stands. 3. Push and shake the truck trying to knock it off the stands... as long as it does not fall I go to work.

My brother owns a truck customizing shop so I take my vehicles there on Sundays and put them on a lift.

Re: Working On The Truck
Don't let this one time fluke deter you from taking time saving shortcuts in the future, now that it's out of the way the odds of it happening again have been significantly reduced, making the shortcut even safer.
Glad to hear you're your okay and have learned a valuable lesson, I worked heavy industrial for years and have personally seen the outcome of shortcuts gone bad, it ain't pretty, from missing digits to death, it ain't worth it. .

Re: Working On The Truck
Nearly lost my dad many years ago as a result of a car falling off a bumper jack. Cross member caught him across the chest. The car was raised by brute strength by whoever happened to be around and one guy that was passing by and jumped out of his car to help. The car came up when that one man added his help. They got him out and he walked about half way to the ambulance before he collapsed or agreed to get on the gurney. Broke some ribs and a collar bone. Damned close call! Nearly 50 years ago.
I will always remember him going to work with that cast holding his arms way out. People didn't miss work back then like they do now. That being said, I should add he was paid for not only for his labor but also for what he knew. These things happen in the blink of an eye. Lets all be careful. |

Re: Working On The Truck
I hope the F-350 is OK??
![]() Just joking!! You are right with what you said in your OP. You're a dumbass for not using jack stands!! I'm glad you're Ok. I've done a lot of work on my vehicles myself and even with jack stands I feel nervous being under the truck! I've known a few people that got killed from the same thing you experienced.

Re: Working On The Truck
HA!! Actually it landed right on the ball joint and at 60k miles I had greasables put in since it didnt come with greaseables from the factory. Well, lets just say that it once again, is no longer a greasable. Pushed that grease point right up into the ball joint.

Re: Working On The Truck
Good to hear you did not get hurt 6.
I work on all our trucks and equipment, always use stands or heavy blocking when any part of one of them is off the ground. |
