Who Watches HowTo Shows?

After reading the lengthy post about Holmes on Homes....I noticed allot of people here watch it and many other how to shows...I think it's kind of funny we work all day in the trades then watch other guys do the same things on TV...kind od like a post man taking a walk on his day off.....I use the excuse I might see a new product I haven't seen before...whats your excuse?...

Re: Who Watches HowTo Shows?

Sometimes I watch them to see if they do something different that I might want to include in what I do.

Mostly though, I find myself making rude comments to the TV about how what they are doing is not the "best" way to do whatever, IMHO of course.

Like Mike Holmes in Cali complaining about having to use nails because screws weren't certified for shear. He kept going on about how screws are better. Too funny.

I do watch them as well. For the new products as you said. We have a local brodcast home how to show, that I watched them install a wax ring upside down on the toilet. I have a bad habbit of picking apart the work though.

I cant remember the shows name, but it was about 2 guys (contractors) in new york. I liked it cause it showed alot about the buisness aspect of it. Havent seen it for awile, must of been cancelled. One of the guys has that new show, 10 grand in your hand, where he helps homeowners save money by doing things themselves.

I enjoy collecting different methods of skinning rabbits.

Someday I'll have a rabbit, and will have to choose.

Under Construction

Don't get me started on 10 grand

I find it interesting to see how it is done on other area's - having worked in AZ, AL, etc... Occasionally I learn a new trick, other times it is worth a laugh.

Besides call it Market research, you know that your customers probably watch a few of them - looking for ideas, etc...

I like to watch "Renovation Realities" on DIY. Shows what's really involved when you start a remodel project.

Re: Who Watches HowTo Shows?

had diy network on the other day, some blond girl host was showing a homeowner how to install wainscotting in the bathroom. going on about how mdf is the far superior product to install in a bathroom because of how its engineered and is much more stable. whats even scarier the host claims to be a licensed contractor.

when i was starting out to see how they would do it. now i watch them for ideas on how to make a trim package or other layout ideas for better flow of rooms. that and the hot petite hosts dont hurt
your cute and blond, stick to installing drapery and picking paint chips

did i mention how i hate interior designers, one designer in town goes on about how its better to do things the way its done on tv. she creates nothing but problems on the projects shes involved in. only to find out she was the designer on a house that was featured on a reno show this past fall and she was made to look like the idiot she is.

Re: Who Watches HowTo Shows?

I watch the how to shows. Seems some of my clients enjoy them and it has helped me land a few jobs. Holms on Homes has gotten me lot of questions if I am doing everything by code. Plus I like to see what other tradesman are doing in their areas.

Hve watched Holmes on Holmes a couple of times and I guess it's ok. Only how to show I really enjoyed was the New Yankee Workshop.
