What Is Your Backup Career Field?

A few recent threads had me thinking the what if? So guys, if you closed your business or lost your job, what would you do? Back up career choice? and I am not asking if you would flip burgers, but how many of us have other true skills in another field? I hold a teaching licence in Oklahoma and Arizona for h/s history and math with baseball coaching, and also an airframe and powerplant licence in aviation...plus a class A CDL so I wouldn't starve.....but I would never be home. Who else is keeping a CDL just in case, or has another field to run to?

Re: What Is Your Backup Career Field?

This is my "back-up" career. I spent over 16 years chained to a desk in the corporate white collar world, was 30 lbs. heavier than I am now and now that I'm doing this, realized that I pretty much hated every minute I was at that desk.

God help me if I ever have to go back to it!

Web programming (yeah I'm a geek at heart), architecture / drafting, or go back to work for Hensel Phelps.

I have a class A as well. I hope I never need to use it. I dont think I would like OTR trucking or having a 10 hour route.

I would more than likely get a job as a mason at a local company. I did get an offer from a local contractor to be his expeditor. That would be something else to think about.

Me..I'd go back to first love..cars.
I worked quite a few years at an auto dealership. It started out as me working part time as a receptionist for a little extra "pocket money" to full time running the service dept. To this day, I am still on their payroll and fill in during an occasional vacation or sale.

Re: What Is Your Backup Career Field?

Backup career field? This is it! I can no longer see a reason to persue anything else. I've seen so many different successful models in this industry that no matter what the market trends, I can adjust to be successful.

Yeah the market is busting up but there are going to be alot of guys going out of business before I do. I'd be a fool not to recognize hard times ahead, what with the new construction drying up, everyone who used to specialize in new, is going to start stepping on my tear off market sector. I'm not worried though, because I can forsee this impending doom I am able to plan. I actually plan to capitolize on other people's hardships.

I will be here for as long as I want to be here or until I get too arrogant to oay attention to market trends.

Having an Electrician License is like having a meal ticket in my pocket. There are Reciprocity agreements for licensing for most states.
Plus if somebody REALY wants to work and has any kind of solid skills there is always a job out there for them.

Ditto. Ten years in an Ad Agency. 1990 -2000. Such an unhealthy environment.

Re: What Is Your Backup Career Field?

12 Years in the restaurant business, did everything from wash dishes to general manager to chef. Hated the hours, hated working every holiday and weekend, HATED doing it all for less than 40k a year. The only benefit was I ate and drank the good stuff and I had company benefits.

I'm proficient in a bunch of other trades, maybe I'd switch over to one of them, but it would not bring me the joy the painting does...I am experienced in car audio installation and audio production, maybe something associated with that field.

I would work nearly anywhere that paid me what I could live on, as long as I didn't have to dress up, shave, or act proper

Re: What Is Your Backup Career Field?

I'd probably just go on welfare.

I used to sell vacuum sweepers door to door, and did better than I ever thought I would. I could do that again if I absolutely had to. I have my HVAC certification, so I could go that route again. It would take an Amish hostile takeover of the world for there to not be any work for an electrician, so I think I'll be good for a while.

I have always thought that the Amish electrician was funny. I don't know how many others caught it.
