At What Point Will Hybrid Vehicles Make Sense?

I need a formula.

How much travel and how much will gas prices have to be in order for it to make sense to invest in a hybrid vehicle?

They don't make one large enough to fit my brood yet (Suburban will be out next year I think) and I'm not ready for another car payment just now but I'm curious.

With gas at $3.29/gal here, I'm really getting annoyed.

I'm entirely pissed that our republicans actually suggested cutting the gas tax in CT for 3 months (the summer) which would save us about $5 a fill up but that the dang bleeding heart liberals cry that "saving consumers a few pennies isn't worth what it will cost the state".

Ummm it will cost 120 million dollars in tax revenue. Subtract that from the current 680 million dollar tax SURPLUS we have right now and I think the state can afford it. Idiots.

Every article, report, and real world test I've read up to this point says not for quite a while
They are still expensive to buy and maintain, and most real people don't get close to those high advertised numbers for fuel consumption
The long term costs are still a big Q

If it's a lifestyle choice, go for it
But it's not an economical one at this point

Though it is possible certain individuals in ideal situations (or fleet/corporate vehicle situations) could actually "save" money, most of the hybrid owners gloating about how much money they save are speaking only about at the pump

Sort of like your friends that go to the casinos and never seem to lose
They only talk about how much they "won"

There was a show on pbs or something a while back that discussed hybrids and hydrogen cars. It said that the state of Oregon was testing the use of GPS to track the miles that people drove because they may have to tax people on mile driven as the hybrids/hydrogen cars become more in use. Seems that they already claim to feel the crunch of hybrids in their state but still want the revenue that they get off gas.

I have been thinking about that formula too. The best buy in these vehicles on my research is :
http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/escape/
Although with gas prices what they are, We Will Pay One Way or the Other. "New Fuel efficient Vehicle or Older Gas Hog" in a Year it All ends up About The Same Money Spent. What Can We Do ?

i tried to weigh it out to.... it would be at least 100 dollars more a month just for insurance... then i would have to pay for the thing 350mo. so even with just the ins i would not be worth it.

Thats What I Am Talking About !!!

New Vehicle Payments Monthly + Insurance and Maintenance in Order to Spend Less at The Pump Now ???

It sure seems like paying for the 15 mpg I get Now is Cheaper in The Long Run.

I put one of those Ford Escapes together with the options I want and it works out to about $25,000 Sale Price.
Even Bone Stock it would run about $20,000 I Think.
Just Too Much.
