We're Burning Up

There are 184 wildfires burning in BC right now, one smallish one in my town, a couple up the lake from me, and one 300 hectare fire burning near the town next to us with residents being evacuated already.

We drove past the 300 hectare fire yesterday on our way back from camping. Quite a sight to see all the planes, helicopters and bombers fighting it.

Here is a pic of the fire taken a couple nights ago.

One contract tree faller has already lost his life.

It's an ugly situation to have the fires burning so close to town. Is your home threatened?

Re: We're Burning Up

Most of the ones near me are lightning caused. We had a pretty wild storm last week.

We camp in a tent.

I have a Winnebago, but it is just a lawn decoration.

No. That fire is a good 30 miles from me.

It is going to be the year of fires here, though.

Nope. Extreme dry and heat combined with about a billion lightning strikes last week.

The sky in Vancouver is orange.

They can be terrifying to experience as well as messy with huge areas burnt off, ash rain falling, the burnt campfire odor permeating the air but it's amazing how fast the forest comes back, not the big trees but all the undergrowth; hope it doesn't get too bad for ya'll and hope we get to the fall without a major one down here.

Re: We're Burning Up

Sorry to hear about it, Shane.

Fires like that suck. We had some big fires here around Labor Day 2011. I was on a grass truck for 5 days, the boys/girls to the east got it worse.

Prayers for the dead and their families. Hope it gets stomped out soon.

Scary stuff.

A friend of mine just started on a wilderness fire crew this year in Colorado.

The BC gov has entered a contract to have the Martin Mars assist in fighting the fires. I saw this plane a few years ago, quite impressive.

I am about 4 hours from Fernie, but looking at this map, there is a good chance.

Re: We're Burning Up

Our big one was last year, Carlton Complex. It was 250K+ acres, biggest in Washington state history. And it started across the field from my house.

We didn't lose anything (wife closed her business, but nothing like our house burning down), but everybody around knows someone whose house burned down. I know quite a few.

Wildfires are no joke, and it sucks because there isn't anything you can do about it. Well, you can water your lawn. Driving down valley, it seems like those who kept a green lawn kept their house while those who kept it all natural lost theirs.
