Vacation In Puerto Rico

My girlfriend was lucky enough to win an award at work that gives the two of us a free 6 day/5 night trip to Puerto Rico in February. I'm not posting this to brag but seeing as I have never traveled to Puerto Rico, I was wondering if anyone might have some advise as to what to see/do while we're there. We're lucky enough to be staying at the El Conquistador and I will be getting out for more than a few rounds of golf.

Thanks!

Re: Vacation In Puerto Rico

I went there about this time last year when I porposed to my girl friend.

Her family is from there so we didn't do the touristy thing. I had more of an authentic experience. I recommend the bacardi distillery. I also recommend the beaches at Dorado or Vega Baha. They are less crowded than San Juan and still clean and beautiful.

Re: Vacation In Puerto Rico

Thanks Grumpy. The resort we're staying at is in Las Croabas - about 45 min. from San Juan. They have a bit of an itinerary for us but won't give us the details - long story... If they don't have us already going to the distillery, I'll make sure we take a side trip. As long as I get 2-3 rounds of golf in, I'll be happy

Have fun and tell us all about it when you get back. I haven't been there in 8 yrs. and would be interested in hearing about it.

Re: Vacation In Puerto Rico

I will definitely do so. I have a feeling most of my stories will probably be related to the golf course though - hopefully you guys won't mind...

And, lucky me, my regular golf excursion to Myrtle Beach is only a month after I get back from Puerto Rico.

After the second trip it's all work though - my deck season will hopefully be in full swing come the beginning of April.

One other thing. You can buy Heinecken at ANY store you pass by. it's about $1 per bottle... except in the tourist areas where it is $4-$5 Talk about markup.

Good to know Grumpy but do they sell REAL beer? You know, CANADIAN beer?

Carona, Heineken, Coors... Those are the best sellers in Puerto Rico. Infact I don't know a Puerto Rican who isn't in love with Heineken.

I am sure you can find some canuc beer at the touristy areas, but no where else.

Re: Vacation In Puerto Rico

That will have to do - I'll probably stick with the Corona. Every vacation area I've ever been to that has Canadian beer waters down the alcohol content and ruins the taste anyway. And since I can't take 5 or 6 cases from Duty Free on the plane with me I'll have to drink what they have. Maybe they'll have some A Marca Bavaria since it's Brazilian - who knows?

Re: Vacation In Puerto Rico

Thanks a lot Pipe! LOL Unfortunately, I'm there to switch planes. Staying on the plane will probably only get me back to Canada.

pond, "Labatt's Blue"? You've got to be kidding me... Although Blue is the first beer everyone from my generation pretty much had for their first beer ('cause we stole it from our Dad's beer fridge), when we got older we developed taste and switched to pretty much anything else. Now if you had of said "Canadian", then I could have agreed with you

It's unfortunate that Labatt's Blue is the most popular beer exported from Canada. The watered down exported version isn't too bad, I guess. But to tell you the truth, the fully alcoholized version of Blue in Canada really sucks in comparison to most everything else.

Well boys, it's almost 10:30 here and I have to get up at 2:30 a.m. for my flight tomorrow morning - it's snowing here so the trip will take a little longer than usual. My girlfriend is still trying on outfits and deciding what to pack!!!

And, guess who was done packing last night...

Talk to you guys when I get back!

IF you decide to come back.

you might just want to get a parcel of land near the water and build a hut or something huh?

Re: Vacation In Puerto Rico

Hello all! I'm back...

And, do I ever wish I was still in Puerto Rico! About 20 hours ago I was watching a beautiful sunrise from the balcony of my room. It truly was a beautiful place and it had the most stunningly beautiful golf courses I have ever had the pleasure of playing.

I always have a hard time leaving 'down island', I have a sister in St. Thomas. Can't imagine what it's like returning to snow. Glad you had a good time, did you get to try the fishing?

Re: Vacation In Puerto Rico

They had a pretty full schedule of things for us so there wasn't time for fishing. I golfed 3 times though. Teetor, I have a feeling that for me golf is the equivalent of fishing to you.

I must add that the people of Puerto Rico had to be some of the friendliest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. It was truly a wonderful experience. I plan to go back one day when I have more time to stay.

You can play pasture pool anywhere but the same doesn't hold true for catching 600# marlin or yellowfin tuna.
