Re: Underwater Nuclear Explosion

PBS had a documentary on testing nukes on naval ships. it was pretty crazy. the funny thing was that even after a wave like that, most were still top side up, and above water.

Re: Underwater Nuclear Explosion

That's too cool. Look aft of the ship in the foreground and you can see another ship in the distance that vanishes instantly upon detonation. If you watch that spot for a second or two it almost looks like something big hits the water, skipping in the direction of the camera.

I saw that one. It was interesting how it took multiple explosions to finally sink them and they didn't sink instantly they eventually sunk days later.

My concern is the contamination of the water. That radioactive water will now evaporate turn to rain and fall on land infecting our drinking supply.

Re: Underwater Nuclear Explosion

I think that y'all need to take a date check on that vid, it's from 1958! I was 7! Wrong? Not at the time. The Cold War was in full swing, people were building bomb shelters in their back yards and nuclear power shows were intended to convince the 'Reds' not to attack.

I remember the time as being pretty intense and remember the Cuban Missile Crisis well.

Teetor, this video, and others like it were routinely sent to communist govts. to entice them into believeing that we are indeed armed and ready. And just as a side note, that detonation took place almost 800 ft below the surface, how many billions of tons of ocean was displaced when detonated?!!

Re: Underwater Nuclear Explosion

don, I'm not denying the fact that the tests took their toll on all facets, this was all fairly new technology. A good read is 'The Making of the Atomic Bomb' by Richard Rhodes. We came very close to blowing up Chicago.

The loss to sealife must have been tremendous. How far away was the shockwave deadly? What is the half-life of the old components used?

Was it right? ????? We were never attacked by the Soviet Union and were never forced to retaliate. It was a volitile time and nothing happened, I suppose that fact may justify the means.
