I use the term Googley head a lot. Every once in awhile I'll call one of my fellas sweety, keeps them on there toes. Most fellas can handle getting the crap kicked out of them but when ya start calling them sweety they get a little scared.

Re: The Turd Princess...
I prefer the Old South manner of respect for everyone. Professionalism is everything. When working with my guys we are on a first name basis. When calling for someone in front of customers or anyone else we use Mr. (lastname) or Miz (firstname). Sir and Ma'am are heard often as well. Even Yankees learn this in a week or two.
It imparts respect. If you do not respect another, say nothing. Being negative or disparaging exposes your insecurities, all WILL notice and it will undermine your effectiveness.

Re: The Turd Princess...
I have to agree with Teetor. I'm all Yankee and I'm sick of being called 'Chief' everytime I meet someone new on a jobsite or supply yard. I usually respond 'funny I don't see a fire' to which they always respond 'huh?' I then explain that 'chief' comes off as rude (even if you're not a Native American). Usually 'excuse me' or 'need some help?' works better.

Re: The Turd Princess...
Rich, allow me to elaborate.
Many years ago, I was on a job and the customer had some questions concerning the HVAC system. The subs supervisor was walking by within shouting distance and I hailed him by calling him Mr. Dodge (I was also kind of poking fun at Yankees). I was setback by the way the customers attitude changed and the difference in the way that the conversation went. I have used this ever since. It's not uncommon to hear my employees referring to each other as 'Mr.'. It works well with temps too, showing some respect with words can yield a much better quality of workmanship. No BS here. Psyche 101 confirms that most people thrive on recognition and respect.

My experience is that it's much easier to consistently maintain a polite discourse amongst project team members in smaller settings (a person's home, an office, or even a small jobsite) than it is in settings where hundreds of personalities are at play. You'd be hard pressed to hear a 'Mr.' come out of the mouth of someone on the sites we work on(even in the weekly progress meetings). Even money on 'hoss', 'chief', or 'turd princess'. |

Re: The Turd Princess...
Again, I'm not saying anyone would say turd princess in front of a HO, just trying to make light of what must be a extremely smelly (but probably high paying) job.... and chief to me is a term of respect...I served in the Air Force as an AC-130 crew chief, and when someone says chief, my head spins to see who needs me... Started the co. in 05, after being out of the military about a year and a half, and I still answer to chief. So, I guess it is all in the ears of the beholder, eh?
