Tournament Fishing

From the late '70s to the mid '80s, we followed the Gulf Coast Marlin tournament circuit, staying mainly in Texas, with the exception of Destin and Cozumel tourneys.

I certainly don't have time or money for it now, but back in the day, it was some fun stuff. Money for nothing and I fished for free. I mated on a bunch of boats, but was full time on The Wahoo, and my Pop's boat, SNAFU. I worked on a bunch, including the Heavy Duty, Throwdown, Annie Fannie and for the day on about 20% of the boats listed.

The sweetest boats of the era were the Sukeba II and the Halfbreed. The Sukeba burned. The Halfbreed went down in less than 10 minutes after hitting the towed leg of an oil rig off Louisiana. The Captain was able to save the frozen crawfish tails from the forward freezer before she went down, however.

Here are the tally sheets for the 1985 Poco Bueno tourney's Calcutta, an invitational only, 100 boat limit tounament that still exists.

That used to be the richest tourney of all, with pots over a million in 1986, but the oil downturn of the late '80s almost killed it.

Does anyone do any tourney fishing? Teetorbilt?

Re: Tournament Fishing

I do 2 or 3 bass tourneys a year with a good friend. Lots of fun.
Goin' 70mph about 12" off the water is way cool!
