Tough Crowd

With all due respect, of course, - - isn't a 'tough crowd' exactly what keeps a 'trade-and-technique' information forum honest??

If no one got at least 'challenged', if not even sometimes 'lambasted' for potentially faulty information, - - then that 'wrong' information would get accepted by those who are inexperienced in that particular aspect, - - but trying to learn based on reliable information from (supposedly) those that are more experienced (at least in that particular field).

Oft-times, - - there are several different methods that work, - - none particularly more right or wrong than the other, - - yet the 'banter' it produces gives a great insight to all the pros and cons of each, - - and then leaves the 'learners' some ample ammunition to form their own opinions.

Being supposedly 'afraid of the tough crowd' seems to me to be more of a sign of underconfidence and/or lack of knowledge than a case of some 'multitude' of mean contractors.

A few examples (by memory only) come to mind.

'DMM' humbly introduced herself as no 'authority' on roof shingles, - - but simply asked for help, - - and recieved it with open arms.

'SuperSteve' came on with the 'me-genius-you-moron' attitude, - - then practically got read the 'riot-act', - - and then STILL got accepted.

'Mighty Anvil' comes on armed with enough knowledge that even those that would 'argue' with him end up still respectfully giving him 'due credit'.

For all of the 'supposed' complaining, - - there sure does seem to be a lot of newbies lately, - - and knowledgeable at that (although it's not 'required'). Welcome.

I submit that a greater influx of complaints of a 'tough crowd', - - is not proportionate to the 'toughness' of the crowd, - - but to the increase of the population.

Unfortunately, - - it comes with the turf.

Short and simple : no.

It's just a rationalization that a few people to use to describe behavior that everybody else sees as simply a clique.

It ultimately works very effectively to stifle the free exchange of ideas on a forum.

Re: Tough Crowd

Thank you for disagreeing and effectively making my point.

Those that read both sides can effectively form their own opinions.

Pros and cons, - - the makings of a true forum.

Well, let's not single out Tom because he his is in the company of others that like to reach (for lack of a better word) beyond their trade or expertise! This nonsense that they give as advice ends up causing us more work to sraighten things out, before someone ends up installing and ruining a job .

No, Plumguy, I respectfully disagree. Almost everything that has gone wrong in recent history IS Tom's fault. I'm sure that if he humbled himself and did a little introspective thinking on that matter, he would agree. I'm still a little sort at Tom about the recent rise in gasoline prices.

Re: Tough Crowd

One thing that we should all remember is that we are from different parts of the country and codes are different. Some build to code, others build to maximize profit, others build for a legacy and some build hoping that the inspectors won't catch shortcuts.

Wind speed is a priority here, snow loading is a joke. Last Sept. we had over 40" of rain so drainage is an issue here, it's probably not such an issue in AZ. In short, we all deal with different problems.

I have noticed that some topics diverge into a wrestling match between a few primaries and I'm not excluding myself from the mix. The site is growing and I believe that Nathan is beginning to enjoy the fruits from his labors, we should all respect this.

one thing i have noticed from this site is that almost everything is done differently here in arizona, and probably california, than it is done over on the other coast

I've noticed that myself. On other forums plumbers do things that just would'nt be excepted over here . Sometimes you feel like you're in different country...well at least I can read their post .

I think its because its growing so fast over here, that they just want to get the house up. and flip it for a profit.
