Took One In The Rear End Tonight.

Driving home from work, minding my own business. Slowly rolling up to traffic stopped for a red light. Glance back in the rear view mirror just in time to see the guy disappear from view behind the tailgate.
SLAM! Dude hits me doing at least 20 miles an hour. I figured by the front end damage to his car that mine would be substantial. His hood was pushed back about halfway to the windshield, radiator was busted and the front fairing was douched up pretty good. My boy caught nothing but the hitch receiver. Only damage to my truck was the paint shavings in the hitch tube.
It was raining, so I went to sit in the truck until 5-0 shows up. Next thing you know, the other driver leaves on foot and doesn't come back. WTF? The other car was registered and insured, but who knows who the driver was? Oh well, gotta love the 2500 HD 4x4.

I'm sure it will be assumed the RO of the vehicle was the driver and will get a ticket in the mail. If it wasn't him/her, it will be up to him/her to chase after whoever was driving.

Worse assumptions could have been made.

He took off because his license was suspended or he was wanted. I had that happen to me a few years ago. Simple parking lot fender bender, wasn't even any damage, police was on his donut break and saw it, decided to come over and just go through motions. Next thing I know, policeman comes back and says "guy just took off through the woods, hold on for a few more minutes"

Check the welds on your hitch before you hook up your next trailer.

Re: Took One In The Rear End Tonight.

Man this same thing has happened to me twice over the past year. First time stopped at an intersection and a guy driving a small ford ranger failed to stop. Rear ended me and pushed my truck into the mini van in front of me. Ranger was totaled, minivan back door was smashed in. My truck had front and rear damage around $5k.

The next time I was on the freeway in stop and go traffic. Traffic stopped, I stopped, full size van behind me stopped, but the truck behind him didn't. He pushed the van into the back of my truck. Only $600 damage that time.

Re: Took One In The Rear End Tonight.

scary, i nearly got rear ended tonight. coming from home depot picking up some osb. in the on ramp to the highway had my blinker going to switch into the main lane which is clear, all of a sudden some jackass in a older ranger comes flying down the road and nearly hits me then give me what looked like the single finger salute.

this sorta thing is happening far to often around hear. people gotta chill out and be more attentive to what their doing on the road

I think so. Hell the safety chain loops are on the hitch. Kinda useless if the whole damn thing falls off.

X-ray would be best. However a welding shop should have the 2 part dye that will find microscopic cracks.

Might be able to pick up the dye kit and instructions at an Air Gas or something.

If it is cracked insurance should pay for a new hitch.
