Today's Job Site.... The Whole Site, And Nothing But The Site.

Had some fun today.

Pipe a detached garage this morning. HOs actually served us lunch (brats, chips, pop, tea, topped off with ice cream). I was almost finished by then, so I took some time and broke out the super-wide-angle lens for my DSLR and took a series of images.

I came home and ran them through some 'stitching' software. I did this just for chits a giggles.

To see the full-size image (warning: it's an 18-megapixel photo, so if you're on dial-up, don't bother unless you want to wait! ), click here.

Now the sad part. Now that it's all done, the builder tells me, "Oh, I forget to tell you. She changed her mind about rocking it, so we're hanging sheetrock next week." I was after that.

So they just working around your pipe?

What software did you use for stitching? I want to start doing that for those hard to take interior shots

That's up in the air right now. Builder admitted he's on the hook for any extra charges to change it to NM.

AutoStitch. Click on Download (Windows Demo). Hang on to your wallet, though.

There's a few tricks to getting images like this.

1. Take lots of overlapping shots.
2. Take them all with the camera vertically. The software can stitch just about any number of images together, so you need to make the photos as tall as you can. Taking them vertically get as much top-to-bottom images to work with as possible
3. Set the focus on manual, and don't let the camera focus for you.
4. Use manual exposure. Using auto-exposure will produce a wide range of exposures from frame to frame.

3 and 4 are the most important. This give the software identically exposed and focused images to work with. Otherwise, the differences will be obvious in the final image.

Photoshop does this as well. I have a 14 mp camera and too many photos will buckle the comp.

These were taken with a Nikon 10-24mm at 10mm.

Nice, would that work with my D80? I'm still new to the photography thing.

I was thinking a tilt/shift lense would be good, but maybe this would be better?

Yes. But it would be the equivelant to a 15-32mm on a 35mm film camera due to the sensor size.

Holy cool garage! That would have been a fun build. I wish our designs had more arches!

Can you post some exterior pics?
