Without giving it away I lost count because of the answer.

Re: Take This Test

I took a defensive driving class and our teacher did the same thing, except he had you look to the left ,center than right , we did it twice. He then asked how many fingers did I have held up. 50 people we all got it wrong, he had held up two fingers ,and said that could have been a child running out in the road after a ball thats all it takes. I think it was the best class I ever took and should be required for people getting drivers license.

Re: Take This Test

I saw it and lost the count. But then again, how many could see it and guess 13 passes?

Re: Take This Test

the count is irrelevent and not the point of the test. Observational skills is the point.

I have seen this same thing on Braniac and this is often used in several different college courses where somebody walks in during the lecture (without being mentioned by the lector) and the class is later asked who noticed them and what they were wearing or doing.

It is a common theme to show that a typical person will not notice a very obvious object when their attention is being directed elsewhere.

How is it irrelevent? At the begining of the test it asks you to count the passes. It takes concentration..

Re: Take This Test

that IS the point. they are getting you to concentrate on something other than the moonwalking bear. It would make no difference if it was counting the passes as they have or looking for how many people flipped you off. The point was to occupy your mind to prove to you how easily your mind is so occupied that it ignores other extremely obvious events.

Re: Take This Test

No! The point is to get the count right and see the bear.

The real point is that we can become so transfixed on a task that we fail to see what else is occurring.

" I have got to get to the Bank before it closes!" Then blammo!!!! You ran a red light and got T-Boned!

The narrator suggests that we MUST get the count correct or WE FAIL! GOD FORBID we fail!

So, in response we tune out the Black team and all else. We concentrate diligently, proving our prowess, and FAIL to see all else!

BUT we got the answer correct even though we wrecked the car!

I was waiting for one of those joke things where the screaming creature appears on your screen. I was cautious while counting.

I was the same way, I was trying to concentrate on the passes but not too deeply.

!
the counting is a ruse. The exercise had nothing to do with the counting. The actual count had no bearing on the situation.

The entire exercise had nothing to do with the counting per se. It had to do with concentration and the inability to see other things in life when you are so focused on one specific thing as you so aptly explained.
