Surf's Up!!!

Tsunami warning here.

It seems pretty serious this time. Lots of closure, evacuations, lines for gas and food.

At leasted I'm prepared....truck is empty, but I got a 5 gallon gas can with approx. 3 gallons in it, half a bag of rice and 8 cans of spam. Figures this would happen on the day I was going to go to Costco.

Couple of bags of Doritos and
a bottle of tequila, you'd be set!

Good luck!
How far inland are you?
They are saying it will mostly
be a problem at bays and inlets?

Re: Surf's Up!!!

I'm on safe ground. On Kauai, 95% of all houses are within 5 miles of the beach. Not so much with the other islands. Our interior is inhabitable. And although I am only 1 mile dirct line of sight to the beach, I am at 800 ft.

Tsunami? I ain't afraid of no stinking tsunami.

Sure wish I had that bottle of Cuervo, though. I was serious about my supplies. I have enough lunch style foods to last a week-IF I was only eating it for lunch.

But early reports from Marquesas are 6-7 waves. And they're saying that is good news. By the time it gets here, it will likely be smaller. But ya never know. A 6-7 foot surge would likely flood everyone on the coast and knock down some older structures, but it certainly won't be a Haiti.

I was working on a hotel in '92 last time we had a serious tsunami warning. Everyone was evacuated, Civil Defens was activated...and we got a 6 inch wave. I almost had to buy a new pair of socks.

Re: Surf's Up!!!

Back in '64 I believe, before they really knew a lot about tsunamis, they had a warning.

One school thought it would be cool to take kids to the beach to check out the "big waves".

When the water receded preceding the surgew, the kids were out there catching fish that were flopping around on the reef.

They all died. A big mofo hit and nearly wiped Hilo from the map.

That sounds more like a mandate of the Surgeon General than Civil Defense.

I've never known them to put those kind of limits on. And one thing that will NEVER be in short supply here, is Spam.

Nice...

A tsunami warning continues in effect for the State of Hawaii. All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face. Pacific Disaster Center is currenlty experiencing heavy online traffic and service may be unavailable at times.

Re: Surf's Up!!!

Man...it's such a beautiful day here. Perfect for the beach. All my work is caught up, it's 75 degrees, not a cloud in the sky and winds are about 1-3 mph. On the bright side, the beach may be a little closer to me by the end of the day!

Re: Surf's Up!!!

Ya know....if this turns out to be a wave of mass death and destruction, I'm probably going to feel bad about cracking wise through all this.

But that's what happens when I get bored. Probably a good thing I don't have any booze in the house right now.

We've been in a serious drought lately. Almost ZERO rain for the last two months. At least coastal lawns will get watered.

a couple palm trees to see if ya catch a few.
