The Stupid Just Can't Get A Break

From the Rocky Mountain News

On Sunday, July 9, 2006, at about 11:15 PM, Aurora Police received a call from the Denver Fire Department indicating that they were out in a field (in the 19600 block of E. 64 th Avenue) with a man that appeared to have been fatally electrocuted.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the man was most likely electrocuted after breaking into a fenced area and tampering with a high voltage ground transformer.

At this time police believe that the man was tampering with the transformer to (possibly) remove its copper wiring. Police in the metro area have had a recent surge in theft(s) of copper wiring (and other metals) by suspects who then sell or recycle the wire for profit.

Also, police questioned a man who contacted Denver authorities, at about 10:40 PM, on the night of the electrocution, to report the victim's body at the E. 64 th Avenue location. Police are investigating if he had any involvement in the breaking and entering at the facility.

Neither party is being identified at this time, since the case is still under investigation.

The victim's cause of death will be determined by the Adams County Coroner's Office.

The rest of the story is that it was a rainy night and they found a few tools laying around his dead body that were obviously with him in order to break into the transformer to steal the copper. The power company representative also said that some of these transformers contain over 3000 lbs of copper and with copper selling at over $3.00 a lbs the temptation obviously was greater than common sense, and that he should have at least waited for a dryer occasion.

Re: The Stupid Just Can't Get A Break

Many years ago, a little girl was killed when playing by a transformer at a long closed hospital. The demolition crew was just coming on site to demolish the hospital, and someone left a gate open enough for some kids to sneak in..and they apparently played on top of the exposed "dead" transformers in a maintenance area...very sad...now why couldn't it have been a low life thief instead of a child? I don't remember the exact reason or cause of the shock that killed her, and I'm not an electrician, but I believe a transformer can hold a charge like a capacitor after the power is cut, and can hold it for a long time.

Hmmmmmm 3000 lbs of copper at $3 per pound. This probably won't be the last we hear of this type of story.

Re: The Stupid Just Can't Get A Break

I have a cousin who is an electrician. He got a call in Daytona beach last year to check out an electrical service problem at a home. When he arrived the home owner told him they had been on vaction for 2 weeks, and when they got home there was no power. They said they called the power company and they said the power was going to the panel, so they needed to call a contractor. He checked out the panel and there were no problems there, so he went up into the attic to check. When he got up there he found no wires anywhere! While the people were away someone had broken in and stole all the wires out of their attic! the theif left all the heirlooms and electronics and stole the wires.....

Re: The Stupid Just Can't Get A Break

Shocking! Just Shocking!

Here's another one:

A guy in a town close to here REALLY needs a drink so he decides to break into the local likker store, through the roof. He sets off the alarm and crashes down through a display, getting cut up pretty badly.....but we came for a drink. He then loads his pockets and clothes with bottles and makes it back up through the hole. Getting off of the roof, he slips, falls, breaks some of the bottles that are stashed in his pants AND loses his wallet. When the police get there, they find the wallet and follow the trail of blood to the guys home where he is actually glad to see them. He was bleeding to death.

Saw a deal on worlds dumbest criminals. Two fella's tried to steel an industrial roll of copper that weighed thousands of lbs. They rolled it off the dock into the bed of their pickup and snapped the rear end in half. No chance in even pushing it away.

Down here, impact windows are gaining in popularity.

This guy tries to break into a quickie mart by throwing a concrete block through the window. The block bounces off and catches the guy in the noggin, knocking him cold. That's the way that the cops found him, an easy bust.

An oldie but a goodie!

The pot run from the Bahamas goes off without a hitch. The van is waiting in a vacant place alongside a little used canal and the transfer is taking place, what could go wrong?

The chosen site is the Broward County Sheriff's shooting range and the SWAT team has just shown up for practice.
