Stress Relief

Wifey figured I breath too much sawdust and need some outdoor stress relief. She consulted some fishermen on a good rod/reel setup to get me down to the river, since it's right down the hill from me. I was happy when I saw the setup. Rhino indestructable rod with an "bait caster" ambassadeur on it. I've never thrown a bait caster before, only your kindercare zebco's and open face for the most part. After about a half hour I think I've finally got the hang of this "new to me" reel. Cast, run out 100 feet of backlash, free lure from whatever it's drifted into, reel er in, repeat process. THIS ISN'T STRESS RELIEF AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW the Ambassadeur does not float.

Re: Stress Relief

Baitcast is the way to go. Once you nail it down you can hit a 5 gal bucket at 50 feet.

Seemed easier to hit it with a 5 pound rock from 5 feet. I did some googling and found a site that gave some tips for learning it. Seems that I was using too light a line 8, with a popper on it. Seems you need to start with heavy line and a sinker in the back yard. I'll give it a chance, but I'm going to pick up an open face till I learn it.

Re: Stress Relief

There's a spool tension adjustment on the left side of the reel. Until ya start getting good with your thumb tighten that baby down a little and the spool will be less likely to spin ahead.

My Pop's has complete faith in his Abu Garcia closed face reel (the red one) and has caught everything from 12# bass to Florida sails on it. I prefer a flyrod, but can operate a baitcaster without bird-nesting it most of the time. Turn up the magnetic freespool.

Re: Stress Relief

In light tackle, I like spinners. There may be some twisting probs. but it beats digging out birdsnests. For real fish, I stick with Penn Internationals, they may be oldies but are goodies.

My favorite 'old reel' story is about a 376# broadbill swordfish that succumbed to and old Ocean City 6/0 back in the early 70's. I was running 80# backing, 100 yds. of 130# monel, a 40 ft 80# shock leader and 12 ft of #5 wire. The hookup occurred at 11:30 PM off of Ft. Laud. and the fish was boated at 7:00 AM off of Palm Beach. I left out most of the good parts.

The reel was retired after this.

Re: Stress Relief

This reel took it better than the Senator with the 600# Marlin hooked to it. That joyride only lased about 10 mins. It was a highs-speed reel with the red sideplates. The Marlin made the drag side brown and cracked even with water being tossed. All of this stuff is in my personal museum. More to this story too.
