WILLARD, Mo. -- A new twist to an old drug may make it more appealing to children. It's called strawberry quick -- strawberry flavoring added to methamphetamine to make it taste more like candy -- and it's already made its appearance in the Ozarks.

The first sighting of strawberry quick was in Willard, not too far from the town's debris dumpsite. It's strawberry flavored and it could be the first of a new trend. It's causing a major buzz with law officers and community groups.

It looks like rock candy, the kind someone might buy as a treat, but there's nothing sweet about these crystals.

"It has a more user-friendly appearance, if you will,” said Capt. Randy Gibson of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.

Strawberry quick is basically meth with pink coloring and strawberry flavoring to remove the bitter test of just plain meth. It showed up on the west coast in mid-February and, in almost no time, wound up here.

“It was almost overnight,” said Gibson.

Greene County officers recently pulled over a car for a traffic violation and found about two grams of it in a seat. So far, detectives think it’s the only case in this area but that doesn't stop community leaders from worrying about the drug's impact on kids.

"When it's put in that kind of format, people often think it's less hazardous,” said Melissa Haddow, executive director of Community Partnership of the Ozarks. "This may appeal to kids that meth or crystal would not appeal to.”

Haddow compares it to how kids think of alcohol. Many see hard liquor, like gin, as dangerous but, at the same time, see drinks like wine coolers as safe.

"I don't know if it's deliberately targeted to kids but certainly it's going to be more palatable for kids,” said Gibson.

"I don't think it is huge right now in the Ozarks at all,” said Haddow, “but we don't want to glamorize it, that's for sure."

The Community Partnership is sending out surveys to area schools to get an idea of how bad meth is among students and to see how much they know, if anything, about strawberry quick.

why would anybody, who doesn't do dope.... be persuaded
by flavored dope? is it a market share, overcoming objections thing? I doubt its for tricking kids, probablly a trendy "nyc" night club thing.... kids don't have $$$$$

& yes jay I'd visit you in the joint. nonetheless, if it is a ploy to get kids to use, very sick...

I watched that segment on the news. I live about 60 miles from Willard there is definitely a meth problem in this area for sure. And for someone to come up with the idea of flavoring the stuff to make it more attractive to anyone is just crazy.

If any of you ever hear the reference to "cheese", that is also a new drug found in the schools now...a starter heroin........geez.......Tylenol cut with heroin....and found with kids as young as 6.......God help anyone who tries to "give" my kid anything like that...I would only hope he would forgive me for what I would do to them.

Oh my god, to think that anyone in the bible belt would so much as take a drink of the devil's liquid, much less use drugs, is just appalling, just appalling, just appalling!!!!! You people in the netherlands should wake up to the fact that a large number of your youth are taking drugs like they are going out of style, better hit them HARDER WITH YOUR BIBLE...

Texas schools battle 'starter heroin'

A new heroin-laced powder known as "cheese" is popping up in middle and high schools in Texas, where dozens of youths have been caught with the drug, federal and local officials say.
So far the problem has been focused on schools in Dallas, where police first reported kids snorting the mixture of ground-up cold medicines and heroin at the start of this school year. However, the Drug Enforcement Administration, which calls the addictive concoction "starter heroin," is concerned enough about the drug's appearance in Dallas that it has alerted agents nationwide to watch for it.

"It's an emerging problem," DEA spokesman Steve Robertson says. "It's something we're tracking to see if we can spread the word before it becomes a huge problem."

Police in Dallas have logged 78 incidents involving cheese in 11 middle and high schools, says Jeremy Liebbe, an investigator with the Dallas Independent School District Police Department.

As is the case on campuses across the USA, marijuana remains the most popular drug in Dallas schools, Liebbe says. Monitoring the Future, a national survey of drug use, said last year that about 27% of 10th-graders had used marijuana during the previous year; the rate for heroin use among such students was less than 1%.

Cheese is a tan powder made mostly from acetaminophen and diphenhydramine HCL — the ingredients in Tylenol PM — with a little heroin mixed in. Liebbe says samples confiscated in Dallas have been up to 8% heroin. The drugs are crushed together and typically folded into notebook paper. A quarter-gram sells for $5, Liebbe says, and a single hit usually sells for $2.

Users feel euphoric and then sleepy, lethargic and hungry, he says. Cheese has been a nickname for heroin, Liebbe says.

The powder has been sold by 18- and 19-year-olds near school campuses and by older students in those schools, Liebbe says. The heroin has been brought from Mexico and then has been mixed with other drugs in the USA, he says.

Six teens in drug treatment at the Phoenix Academy in Dallas used cheese, director Michelle Hemm says. One boy was 12 when he started using it, she says.

Hemm expects to see more youths hooked on cheese, which is so affordable "little kids can purchase it. Kids in here, they all know lots of other kids using cheese. This is the tip of the iceberg."
