Re: Stop Smoking

Bump...so how are the non smoking trials working?

My son is a smoker, and I blackmailed him yesterday. He knows since my heart attack, I need to get a full workup done....I will when he quits.

Re: Stop Smoking

So far no problems at all. I actually despise the smell of cigarette smoke now.

I stopped drinking as much as I use to and had a few beers last night, man was I in heaven.

Rory, they say you can never really quit until you are ready. For me, after 30 years, that was right after the first Redskins home game after 911. Haven't looked back since. You will also notice that food and drink will start to taste better, and you will notice, by smell, everyone around you who smokes, every car in which someone smokes, and every trash can in which butts have been dumped. Will get to be disgusting and you will also get to the point of not wanting to eat in a restaurant that allows smoking.

Just don't become an anti-smoking nazi and those around you will still like you.

Funny thing is I was the smoking and health Nazi for 20+ years. I had some bad accidents as a kid and had to exercise for many years. I did not try a smoke until I think I was 32.

Re: Stop Smoking

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I had a heart attack four years ago and I still smoke.
Slumped out swinging a hammer one morning. Had an emergency angioplasty and two stents installed.
Got out of the hospital and right back on a pack a day.

It's a heinous addiction. And I am aware that I must stop, and the fact that I haven't yet is pretty weak on my part.

I have been reading up on Chantix and it seems like a viable option for those who find it hard to stop. Take a look at it

I'll ask my doctor about it. ANYTHING, including some medication that I don't do so well on is better than smoking.

If you are considering Chantix, read these:

and:

When you look like this, or this , we'll know why.

Since I am a former-smoker as well, I hate when someone who smokes gets real close to me to say something or other. Man do you know bad that stinks? Nasty.

Way to go Rory, good job brother.

Re: Stop Smoking

"Chantix, the stop smoking drug that has reportedly caused suicidal thoughts and other psychological problems in some users, will soon bear new warnings. Pfizer, the maker of Chantix, has chosen to include warnings about instances of depressed mood, agitation, suicidal thinking and suicidal behavior that have been reported among some users of the pill, even though the company claims that a “causal” link between the problems and Chantix has yet to be proven.

Such Chantix side effects may have played a part in the death of musician Carter Albrecht. Albrecht, best known as a member of Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, started taking Chantix in late August 2007. Immediately, Albrecht began to complain of vivid, hallucinatory dreams — a common Chantix side effect. One night about a week after he started taking Chantix, Albrecht had a violent encounter with his girlfriend. Albrecht’s girlfriend reported that he was confused, and did not recognize her. Before the night was over, Albrecht had been shot dead by a terrified neighbor on whose property he had trespassed. It was the Albrecht death that first put a spotlight on possible Chantix problems.
"

Re: Stop Smoking

Good post guy's I tell you it's the nicotine I smoked over 30 years and quit 4 years ago with the patch, It took longer than they recommend like 6 month's for me I think I just had to get out of the hand to mouth habit, then I did'nt want to stop the patch so I figured I just chew a piece of nic gum well 2 years latter I'm back on the patch because I was chewing 20 pieces of gum a day anyway I'm hoping this time to get away from it for good I guess it is better than smoking but man the stuff gets expensive

Re: Stop Smoking

52 years old. Been smoking this time for 5 years. Quit for 8 years prior. I'd sure like 2 quit again I know I could do it...... BUT, this economy has me stressed. Just made a deal with the bank 2 keep my house (they were ready 2 foreclose). So now i'm current with the bank for now. I feel fortunate 2 have 6 weeks of work in front of me. A lot of guys in my area have nothing. Maybe it's a crutch but 2 quit now aint in the cards. Reminds me of a 80's Ry Cooder song " how can a poor man live in times like these". Just my 2 cents. Man....... Was that whining or what ? Dont answer that.

Believe it our not. I stop smoking because I know I will need to be in tip top health, body and mind to survive.

I stop smoking, cut back on drinking and will start back on a serious exercise regime in Feb.

We all need to be in the best of health and mindset to ready ourselves for the battles we will face this year.

I refuse to be stress out and continue to be unhealthy any longer.

I can see all the stress related illness's that will crop up this year.

Don't do it to yourself. Be prepared to fight the good fight

I've been thinking about that a lot lately. Thanking my lucky stars that I didn't go the route of being a briefcase contractor and I'm in a tool belt as much as possible. Could have made more money not doing it that way I suppose, but I like swinging that hammer and running that jack.

For me it's the stress that concerns me the most. I've had no luck with the stress reducing crap they've given me at the VA, and the Wellbutrin for the smoking turned me into a friggin' sloth with a bad attitude.
And the dreams, fuggedaboutit.

I'm going to give it a shot I think. I shyed away from all that stuff after the Wellbutrin's side effects scared hell out of me. I'm pretty sure the VA dispenses Chantix now.
I've got to hand it to the VA, they will give a vet whatever they need to help them stop puffin'.
Along with everything else I need in the way of meds that would cost me $200 to $300 a month otherwise.

Re: Stop Smoking
