Re: Someone Should Fly A Plane Into Wallmart HQ's

I have a very good friend that has been in the retail and custom install audio/visual industry since he was 15 years old (30 years). He started working at Circuit City when it was Dixie Hi-Fi or some other previous name I can't recall. He's worked for the Tweeters and Myer-Emco's, Viking Yacht and several other PA/NJ/NY based companies.
He'll be the first one to tell you that Circuit City has been "on the brink" since it began opening stores. I'll be the first one to tell you its one of those stores for which I have to kick myself every time I shop there. The loss of Circuit City is hardly something worth losing sleep over. They haven't offered anything unique since Best Buy opened.
As far as the "high end" A/V companies go, their existence will always depend on how easy it is for a DIY'er to buy and install what it wants. The passing of Tweeter isn't even a blip on the economic screen.
Consumer electronics have become commodities and Walmart is doing away with those who would have consumers believe otherwise.

That's funny! That has been my feelings about Circuit City for the last 10 years too! I've been in that place probably 5 times in 10 years and each time I kick my self for wasting the gas and effort to walk in and out of it, vowing every time never to go back and wondering every time how the hell that store stays open. They have never offered anything unique, serve no niche, whether it was a great selection of items you wanted, pricing or shopping experience. I was getting the feeling they must be laundering mob money through them to have kept them open this long.

Good riddance.

Let people buy their crap at Walmart and then screw up installing it. This is where I have come in many many times to install a 'home theatre in a box', or fix up one that someone couldn't figure out.

Keep in mind that what you buy at Walmart usually wasn't built for quality, but for price. Some of the name brands have even compromised quality of their goods with cheaper lines in order to maintain representation at the worlds largest retailer.

Wait until they start offering service.. Like Home Depot. Then be afraid.

What caught competitors off guard was that Wal-Mart also cut the price of a top brand name -- the 42-inch Panasonic high-definition TV -- by $500, to $1,294. That sent dozens of retailers across the country scrambling, and many rushed to match prices: Circuit City offered the same Panasonic TV at $1,299, while Best Buy sold a Westinghouse 42-inch LCD for $999. Others tried to lure customers to larger TVs -- CompUSA gave a $500 rebate on its 50-inch Panasonic plasma for $2,499.

Panasonic executives are still smarting from Wal-Mart's decision to drop the price on its 42-inch model, although company officials won't discuss the issue. "I'm not going to comment on what Wal-Mart did," says Andrew Nelkin, president of Panasonic Professional Display in Secaucus, N.J.

I'd love to catch my competitors "off guard". It'd serve'm right. And as far as the supplier (Panasonic) commenting on Walmart'd decision, what's to be said? Panasonic got their money and that's all the ycare.
Instead of buying reading glasses I bought a Vizio 42" LCD HDTV/monitor at Costco for $1200 three months ago. I can work comfortably with the monitor at a six foot viewing distance and it makes viewing e-plans, big spreadsheets and other various images a breeze. I highly recommend going big on the PC monitor as soon as its affordable

If did not read the article yet but....how long until everyone drops them? If *** sold me a product for $500 and said that the msrp is $1200 and that others are selling it for $1000.00, now they sell the same product to wallymart who sells it for cost at $425. Would you buy products from this vendor?

If everyone dumps them then they will go under when wallymart does not support their marketing budget. If no one shows their products in their weekly inserts then the name/brand will fade away.

Why compete with wallymart everyone should just sell better products. (you can delete wallymart and insert blowes or homecreapo)

my 2 cents

Re: Someone Should Fly A Plane Into Wallmart HQ's

Guys,

I wonder how we would feel about Walmart if the got into the Sewer Business... or... started doing plumbing... or got into the bathroom remodeling business... or electrical work... or started building houses? How would we feel when they started bringing in Chineese people to work for 0.34/hour? Could you compete with them? Would you still let your wife shop there when you had to cut your prices in half?

Walmart now has the ability to process paperwork in China... where they pay 0.34/hour. How are you going to compete with that? Are you willing to work for 0.34/hour? Do you know someone that is?

I agree that Circuit City isn't that great. BUT, the more competition there is the lower prices are.

We all know the pattern of Walmart. Once those other retailers have closed up stores, laid off workers, and maybe even shut down operations... Walmart will then raise their prices.

It seems to me that we are so greedy and self-centered that we don't consider the consequences of saving money. So, we shop at Walmart because it is cheap... Then, our neighbors lose their manufacturing jobs so that Walmart can bring in cheaper goods from China. The goods come in at less than half of the cost of American goods... Walmart lowers the price a few cents. THEN, our neighbors can't afford to pay professionals to paint their houses, do plumbing, or electrical... etc. So, they learn to do things themselves. And, they in turn will hire the cheapest people they can to do work... even if they aren't US citizens and don't speak english!

If you see me in a Walmart... quietly exit... I'm there to ROB IT!

Why indeed? You'd have to ask Circuit City that question.
Of course if everyone is going to sell "better" products (presumably at a highe price than Walmart) that implies there are buyers who actually want to pay more for the "better products".
Why doesn't Walmart simply raise its price to that of the higher priced stores?

You mean like Home Depot already does? Who cares.

Hey why are you all worried about freaken what Walmart does? You're all crying about some competitor doing something that effects busineses.

Go look at the thread about cell phones and taking calls at times of the day. My work day is 8-5, mon-fri, about 90% of you have a work day from 7-7 mon-sat. Why don't the same people who are upset about Walmarts tactics change your own tactics and only work the hours I do?

You don't see me worried about your tactics that are undercutting me with you all being more available and working more hours.

Hmmm? See the point? Maybe? Probably not.

Re: Someone Should Fly A Plane Into Wallmart HQ's

For all of the statistics we see about sales figures and cost cutting, there is an element missing. What is the overhead of these companies? If Wal mart started out slow and built capital in it's infancy, which led to the purchase and outright ownership of its store locations, why would a business that leases space be able to compete? They would have to be more creative, innovative, and sell the customer on quality and service.... Just like we all have to do in order to stay in business.

As far as the other B.S. about employees not making enough money, or not enrolled in company healthcare..... Did these employees walk in and fill out an application? Could they do something else instead? I left a good paying job which I saw a limited future in. I had NO experience in my trade or in running a business. I had VERY little startup money ($2,500). I used my head and learned all that I could (and continue to learn every day), and I have really made this work!

If someone is not willing to put in the effort that it takes to make real money, or they simply don't want to or need to, then they need only look in the mirror when they wonder why life is not fair......

Kind of an interesting thought, a corporation takes over the world financially.

Look at the inroads that they have made already. They're buddies to all nations that produce inexpensive goods, a major buyer. They probably represent a good portion of certain countries GNP. Food for thought.

Today money makes the world turn.
