Some Before Ike And After Ike Shots

I didn't take these pictures. But thought they were quite shocking. Very sad!

Why is it sad? Every single person who built a McMansion on the West end of the Isle of Galvez knew that the day of reckoning would come. It did.

The sad thing to me is that all of that development was allowed to happen in the first place. The ones I feel sad for are the year 'rounders who have been paying crazy taxes because of the development out there for 20 years.

This is how barrier islands should be handled:

Yeah, they can brag that they will be able to reuse the poles after they tear the rest of the garbage down.

It IS a start ahead of the rest unless the insurance companies are involved.........Not like that will be an issue!

Re: Some Before Ike And After Ike Shots

One thing they seem to be getting better at down there,is raising the minimum height above sea level every time a hurricane does some damage.

There are homes in some sub divisions that were built during various minimum height restrictions. The lots or foundations were raised to meet code .
So, over a number of years ,and because no one wanted a lot that was too close to their neighbor.a house built 5 years earlier would be dwarfed by the newer higher and often larger house. These later homes were squeezed into the few remaining available lots and had minimal side yards of 10' .
Not a pretty sight, looking out your kitchen window eye level to the neighbors foundation.

Once those sub divisions filled up,it was off to the beach,West Beach to be exact, closed down for development.

I guess with the last threat of a 20' surge the newer homes will have to be built on top of 20' pilings?
It gives a whole new meaning to going"down to the beach".

The whole thing is sad, Don't get me wrong. I am FROM Houston, and have friends and family there still. McMansions on the beach, sorry, no pity.

Re: Some Before Ike And After Ike Shots

I have heard the same quote from people living very near the water in California, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL and MS - "Don't buy right on the oceanfront, but go a block back since it will eventually be oceanfront."

After Katrina, many of the people with the waterfront property in MS came out better after than before. - Land values went up and they had insurance. Of course the rates will go up everywhere because of history and if they only build to meet the code. A new voluntary construction standard can get 45% to 60% insurance reductions off the NEW rates and guarantee future rates and coverage if it is followed and certified.

Regardless of whether they knew about the potential dangers of a storm like this when they bought the land, it is still a sad situation. I hope everyone there recovers and could get on with their lives in the near future.
