The Smell Of ??

This ? might be better for cleaning forum but I'll try it here.

I had a tenant for a very short time (like 2 weeks) and when he left I first thought that he had been a heavy chain smoker. After about three weeks of trying to get the smell out I decided it was not cigarettes. I've had plenty of pot smokers and am familiar with that smell and never had trouble airing out a place from pot.

The place just became vacant again and the smell still lingers a little after 2 years. No enough for people to notice but enough for me to notice.

I know the guy worked heavy equiptment on commercial jobs and am reasonably certain he would have been drug tested but I'm thinking "crack". Anyone know what crack might smell like??

I might describe this smell as some kind of burnt plastic. Any ideas??

Could be diesel fuel/oil or hydraulic fluid. All have odors that won't go away. Have you tried Febreeze? There's another deodorant out there that a friend with 6 cabin efficiencies uses. I'll see if I can find out what it is tomorrow.

Re: The Smell Of ??

I have heard people refer to crack as smelling like burning styrofoam.

That might be it then. Thanks Slow. I guess it's better than if someone was making meth on a property.

If you rent an ozone generator and run it in that place all closed up for about a week, that smell will go away. An ozone generator (or two, three, four) is the only thing that I know of that will take cat pee smell out of a place.

I'll try the ozone gen. Thanks.

I have cut out a section of subfloor because of cat pee. In my case it was in one area.

According to my wife, any burnt, plastic smell is a warning flag for meth cooking (she is a Parole officer with the State of Oklahoma), and if she is doing home visits, and gets a whif of any chemical or burnt smell, she calls for 1: backup, 2: Hazmat team.
