Small Engine Carb Questions

Having a friend argument with my guys, none of us are mechanics, but....

On a small engine carb. Is there such a thing as an air screw on a carb? What type of adjustments are on a carb?

Re: Small Engine Carb Questions

Nothing but the fuel screw. Air flow is not adjustable. You just set the amount of fuel let in through the venturi.
The throttle determines the amount of air.
Used to rebuild them years ago. But now its cheaper to buy the whole block cheaper than rebuilding them

BTW, Tecumseh all the way. Brigs and fall aparts are junk.

so far knock on wood, we have been lucky, been cleaning the same carbs. stipping the carb down, cleaning all screws and ports, change spark plugs and good to go.

Most of the time you can. Piss's me off when I see someone pull, and pull, and pull on a starter rope. If everything is set right, a simple SLOW pull on the rope about 1/2 way out should make it start. If not, something is wrong, fix it!

Another tidbit, if its a push mower and you hit a stump that causes the motor to stop all of a sudden, replace the key way behind the flywheel. Thats what sets the engines timing. When the blade strikes a solid object and suddenly stops the flywheel wants to keep going. Not much, but enough to disrupt the timing.

There used to be adjustments, but now-a-days, because of the Clean Air Act (CAA), there are NO adjustments.

To start any 2 Cycle small engine machine, set the choke, give a healthy pull, turn the choke off, then pull again.

All too often, persons crank and crank and crank with the choke engaged.

One crank with the choke engaged is all that is necessary.

Yeh, probably none now, used to be not long ago. Maybe 5 years ago is when I quit working on them.

So the same engine is going to run the same whether I'm in Denver CO. or if I'm in Miami FL.

I don't think so!!

They have tamper caps on the high and low adjustments, which can be removed and the carb tuned.

Re: Small Engine Carb Questions

It depends on the equipment and age. My new chainsaws have the screws but it takes a special tool to adjust them.

Most non-fixed carbs have a high speed and low speed adjustment screw plus an idle adjustment screw.

Need to know how to adjust? Just ask.

Re: Small Engine Carb Questions

Turning the fuel screw would change the ratio of air/fuel. Lean=more % of air in the combustion chamber Rich=less % air in the combustion chamber.
Some people might consider that an "air adjustment".

Those "some people" don't work on small engines for a living, either.

The only thing that changes the air cfm, is the choke.
